Method and a device for casting in a mould

Apparatus for heating intermediate ladles or tundishes, for example, in continuous casting processes. The apparatus comprises at least one coil having an iron core, which is disposed adjacent the ladle or tundish. The ladle or tundish and the coils are arranged so as to be movable with respect to each other. The ladle or tundish is adapted to be placed in a heating position adjacent to the coil, which is thus closely connected with the bottom or lower parts or corners of the ladle or tundish, in order primarily to heat the lowermost parts of the melt stored in the tundish.

Heating apparatus for intermediate ladles or tundishes

A level meter in a mold for continuous casting has an assembly including a continuous casting mold, an annular multi-phase electromagnetic stirrer surrounding the mold, and a source of radioactivity projecting a beam of radiation through the mold, a detector for the beam being positioned on the opposite side of the mold. To permit the stirrer to have a height providing optimum stirring, two of the coils of the stirrer have portions of reduced height forming spaces opposite to each other and through which the beam can be projecting to the detector. Therefore, the height of the stirrer need not be reduced to provide for the beam and detector arrangement.

A continuous casting apparatus has a plurality of non-magnetic rollers which contact a side of a continuously cast traveling strand. To support each roller against bending, the roller is journaled at its opposite ends and also at least at one interposed position between its ends to define roller lengths between each two of the bearings. Inductive stirrers providing traveling magnetic flux fields extending for the full extent of each length in each instance, are positioned on the outside of such roller length so as to project flux fields without interruption through the roller between its journaled ends and the interposed journaling position. Uniform uninterrupted fields are provided regardless of the strand's width.

Apparatus for the continuous casting of metal

A method for continuously pouring molten metal in an initially substantially unfilled tundish having a channel-type inductor having a channel opening into the bottom portion of the tundish, is done by starting the pourings and the continuous sequential steps of applying power to the inductor when its channel is first covered by the poured metal to form a melt level and the static pressure of the metal is low and while increasing the power rapidly so as to cause incipient pinching in the channel and then momentarily rapidly reducing the power so as to prevent pinching; as the metal level further increases so that the metal's static pressure further increases, again increasing the power rapidly so as to again cause incipient pinching in the channel and then again momentarily rapidly reducing the power so as to prevent pinching; and continuing these sequential steps until the tundish is filled.

Method for providing pinch control of a tundish channel-type inductor

The mold is rotated during casting while projecting at least one traveling magnetic stirring field tangentially into the melt so as to rotate melt to the mold speed.

Method of and apparatus for centrifugal casting

A method for stirring the unsolidified metal in the cast strand in continuous casting uses an asymmetrical multiphase stirring current with asymmetry caused by the phase angle of one phase of the current deviating from the phase angle of another phase of the current. In addition to the asymmetrical stirring, symmetrical stirring can be used at a location adjacent to the asymmetrical stirring so that the benefits of both types of stirring are obtained.

Method for stirring in continuous casting

A system for stirring in continuous casting is formed by an inductive stirrer which inductively stirs molten metal in a continuously cast strand and at least one set of two water-cooling pipes positioned in front of the stirrer and having nozzles which eject water cooling-sprays against the strand. The two pipes have ends extending beyond the field and between their ends are electrically isolated from each other and the stirrer. By electrically interconnecting these ends outside of the field, the two pipes form a closed electric loop in which currents induced by the stirrers field cancel so that the net current flow is zero and the stirrer's field is not shielded from the strand.

During continuous casting, the stream of molten metal poured into the mold is acted on by a static magnetic field so as to split the stream into smaller streams stirring the unsolidified metal in the mold.

Continuous casting mold stirring

A multi-phase stirrer for stirring the molten cores of cast slabs from continuous casting machines is divided into at least two partial stirrers with each partial stirrer comprising at least one phase winding and fed with a number of phases at least one less than the total number of phases of the stirrer apparatus. Each partial stirrer may be arranged at different sides of the cast slab to form a rotary field around the cast slab in association with the other partial stirrers. Additional iron cores may be arranged in the air gaps formed between the iron cores of the respective partial stirrers. Alternatively, the additional iron cores may be arranged within the support tubes of the casting apparatus.

Multi-phase stirrer

A valve device for metallurgical containers includes an electric circuit formed by two electrodes opening out into the molten metal at the tapping point. The electric circuit measures the resistive voltage drop across the molten metal at the tapping point to determine the slag content in the tap stream by changes in the measured resistive voltage drop. The rate of tapping of the melt can be controlled simultaneously along with the indication of the presence of slag in the tap stream.

A DC electric arc furnace melt connection of the type formed by a metal connector with an inner end melted by the melt and an outer end kept solid by cooling, extends from the furnace hearth at a declination straight and free from curvature and with a uniform and constant cross-sectional area from end to end having a rectangular oblong cross sectional shape with the long sides extending in a horizontal direction. The purpose is to reduce the flow currents normally formed by gas bubbles and electrodynamic effects within the melted portion of the connector and which cause the melted part to wipe over the unmelted part of the connector with the undesirable result of promoting heat exchange between the two parts.
