A lottery ticket dispensing unit includes at least one ticket compartment and a separation module that has a drive roller and an opposed idler roller, with a motor geared to the drive roller. An automatic separator device is provided, wherein the drive roller conveys a leading lottery ticket to a separation position such that a line between the leading ticket and an adjacent ticket is presented to the separator device. The separator device includes a shuttle that travels in a linear path along the line, the shuttle having a head that engages and separates the leading ticket from the adjacent ticket along the line. A bi-directional drive mechanism moves the shuttle back and forth along the linear path.

A lottery ticket dispensing system includes a cabinet housing and a lottery ticket array insertable into the cabinet housing. The array includes a plurality of individual bins in a stacked configuration. A dispensing unit is inserted into each of the bins and includes a ticket compartment in which a continuous strip of lottery tickets is contained and an automatic separation module in which a leading ticket of the continuous strip of lottery tickets is automatically separated and dispensed from the bin. The bins are connected together in the stacked configuration such that the lottery ticket array is insertable into and removable from the cabinet housing as a single unit. The stacked configuration has opposite sides defined by the sides of the bins. At least one first component of a detachable support system is attached to the opposite sides of the stacked configuration, the first component cooperating with a second component of the detachable support system provided on inner side walls of the cabinet housing.

A circuit board fixed to the back side of the housing to supply power and control functions to the bin. The circuit boards of adjacent bins are rigidly interconnected via complimentary electronic connectors. A system and associated method are provided for dispensing lottery tickets at retail establishments. A lottery ticket terminal is in communication with a retail POS register and accepts a request for purchase of a particular lottery ticket selected from a plurality of different lottery tickets. A dispenser array is in communication with the terminal and includes a plurality of separate bins having a different respective lottery tickets stored. The lottery tickets have a machine readable code printed thereon and each bin includes a scanner disposed to read the code as the tickets are dispensed from the bin by an electronic drive mechanism. The lottery ticket terminal transmits a purchase signal for dispensing a particular lottery ticket that is routed to the respective bin containing the particular lottery ticket. The bin transmits a signal that is routed to a central lottery server for each lottery ticket dispensed from the bin, the signal identifying the lottery ticket from the scanned code.

Method and system for enhanced lottery ticket accounting and sales with smart bin dispensers at a retail establishment

A lottery ticket dispenser array includes individual ticket bins defined by a respective housing for receipt of a supply of interconnected lottery tickets. Each bin has an electronic drive mechanism that dispenses the lottery tickets through a slot is defined in a back side of each bin housing. A separation device is adjacent the slot. A calibration slot is defined through a member internal to the housing and is located such that the lottery tickets pass alongside the calibration field in a travel path through the slot. A receiver is disposed internal to the housing opposite to the calibration slot to receive light that passes through the slot. The receiver and the drive mechanism are in communication with a control system. Based on a position of a forward edge of a leading ticket in the calibration slot and an amount of light passing through the slot and incident on the receiver, the control system determines an adjustment to a predefined length of the leading ticket to advance in a subsequent dispense cycle.
