An improved magnetic head is disclosed for stable pole tip to tape contact pressure despite head wear and tape tension variations. A magnetic head which contacts the magnetic tape comprises a ferromagnetic body. A recess is provided in this ferromagnetic body. A ferromagnetic core has pole tips which are located in the recess and which are arranged for contact with the magnetic tape. A non-magnetic material is arranged along each side of the magnetic core pole tips in the recess. Relative hardnesses of the ferromagnetic body, ferromagnetic core pole tips, and nonmagnetic material are chosen so that as the tape wears away on contact surfaces of the magnetic core pole tips, non-magnetic material, and ferromagnetic body, the core pole tips protrude relative to adjacent portions of the ferromagnetic body and the non-magnetic material so that the tape rides on the protruding pole tips of the core. A radius of curvature at the contact surface of the magnetic core pole tips prior to wearing of the pole tips is chosen such that it is smaller than a natural radius of bending of the tape.

Servo track pair position and longitudinal tape position is determined for a tape using dedicated servo format. The tape includes at least one set of data tracks and dedicated servo tracks wherein adjacent servo tracks are defined by longitudinal lines through the edges of erased or non-recorded tape portions. The information about servo track pair numbers and/or servo sample numbers is recorded into portions of the tape and is decoded and read back together with signals from the servo track. The information is recorded in a digital manner by using a digital block format of data blocks requiring less bytes per block than a data block provided on the data tracks. If information about longitudinal tape position is not required, information may be recorded in an analog manner using a fixed set of predetermined frequencies.

Method for determining the tape position using dedicated servo format

Servo track pair position and longitudinal tape position are determined for a tape using dedicated servo format. The tape includes at least one set of data tracks and dedicated servo tracks wherein adjacent servo tracks are defined by longitudinal lines through the edges of erased or non-recorded tape portions. The information about servo track pair numbers and/or servo sample numbers is recorded into portions of the tape and is decoded and read back together with signals from the servo track. The information is recorded in a digital manner by using a digital block format of data blocks requiring fewer bytes per block than a data block provided on the data tracks. If information about longitudinal tape position is not required, information may be recorded in an analog manner using a fixed set of predetermined frequencies.

Method for determining servo track pair position and longitudinal tape

Timing signals are generated in a prescribed time duration after signal edges of data signals. Integrated data signals, rather than the data signals themselves, are sampled with these timing signals. First, data contained in the data signals is recovered from the sampling signals generated by the sampling. Noise signals are eliminated by integration of the data signals, and the data is recovered with greater protection against disturbance. The integration can occur with analog or digital components, and it is possible to provide the sampling of the data signals in addition to the sampling of the integrated data signals in order, when warranted, to recover the data from the data signals, or from the integrated data signals, dependent on the respective disturbances.

Method and arrangement for disturbance-proof recognition of data

In a system for controlling the motion of a magnetic head in a magnetic tape recorder, in order to achieve an optimally uniform wear of the magnetic head at a side thereof facing the magnetic tape, the magnetic head is constantly moved back and forth during a movement of the magnetic tape during at least one of the modes fast forward and rewind. In magnetic tape recorders wherein the magnetic head is positionable to various tracks of the magnetic tape transversely relative to the moving direction of the magnetic tape, wear on the head can occur at least partially during fast fast forward and rewinding modes. By moving the head during fast forward or rewind, the magnetic head is less heavily worn and the edges of the magnetic tape are not damaged by undesirable depressions in the head.
