An apparatus and method for classifying value documents includes least two sensor devices arranged to capture waves reflected on a front side and on a back side of a value document and to generate corresponding sensor data or to capture properties of the value document in at least two different regions of the value document by means of different measuring principles and to generate corresponding sensor data. At least one evaluation device is arranged to classify the value document with the aid of the sensor data generated by the at least two sensor devices, which sensor data relate to the waves reflected on the front side and back side of the value document or to the properties of the value document captured in the at least two different regions of the value document by means of different measuring principles.

A method is provided for detecting a security thread in a value document, in which magnetic data are employed for sites on the value document. The magnetic data represents a magnetic property of the value document at the site, check sites on the value document are determined employing the sites, and from the check sites, a straight line is specified, along or on which at least some of the check sites lie and which represents a location of the security thread.

The magnetic checking of value documents with highly coercive and/or lowly coercive magnetic regions, involves after the magnetization of all magnetic regions in a first direction, a second magnetization is effected, in which only the lowly coercive magnetic material is re-magnetized, but the highly coercive magnetic material remains aligned in the first magnetization direction. Magnetic signals are detected with an inductive magnetic detector, having several measuring tracks transverse to the transport direction of the value document. A minima comparison value and/or maxima comparison value of the respective measuring track is determined. The magnetic coding of the security element is checked on the basis of the minima comparison values and/or maxima comparison values of the measuring tracks.

A method carries out a soiling check of the measurement window of a measuring device for checking sheet material. A measuring device carries out the method. A device for processing a sheet material comprises the measuring device. A method for identifying suspected counterfeit and/or counterfeit banknotes paid into an automatic teller machine, wherein banknotes to be paid in are checked for authenticity on the basis of data from a sensor device. The identification is achieved by linking data from the sensor device concerning the suspected counterfeit and/or counterfeit banknotes to an identity of a payer.
