The present invention relates to a mercury dispensing system () for fluorescent lamps, comprising a dispensing member () containing a mercury releasing compound. The dispensing member () is fixed on a metal support () suitable to be heated by electromagnetic induction in order to cause the activation of said mercury releasing compound. The surface area of the metal support () is comprised between 9 and 64 mm. The invention also relates to fluorescent lamps comprising said mercury dispensing system ().

Compositions for mercury dispensing in lamps are disclosed, comprising a first component comprising mercury and at least a metal selected between titanium and zirconium and a second component consisting of aluminum or either a compound or an alloy including at least 40% by weight of aluminum, wherein the weight ratio between the first and the second component is equal to or lower than 9:1; optionally, the compositions may also include a third component, selected among metals or oxides capable of reacting exothermically with aluminum.

Mercury dispensing compositions and device using the same

A device and a method are disclosed for introducing into the fluorescent lamps small amounts of mercury. The device is formed of a metallic container which is capable of containing powders of one or more compounds having the general formula Ti Zr Hg , but is not hermetically sealed, in order to allow the discharge of mercury vapors generated by the decomposition of such compounds. Some possible device geometries are disclosed, as well as some possible arrangements of the same inside lamps. Finally a method is disclosed for introducing mercury into a lamp by means of a device of the invention, without the device remaining in the resulting lamp.

Device for introducing small amounts of mercury into fluorescent lamps

A mercury-dispensing device is disclosed that includes a mercury dispenser comprising an intermetallic compound including mercury and a second metal selected from the group consisting of titanium, zirconium, and mixtures thereof; and a promoter that comprises copper, tin and at least a third metal selected among the rare earth elements. A getter material selected among titanium, zirconium, tantalum, niobium, vanadium and mixtures thereof, and alloys of these metals with nickel, iron or aluminum can be included in the device. The mercury dispenser, promoter and optional getter material are provided preferably in the form of powders compressed as a pellet, or contained in a ring-shaped metallic support or rolled on the surfaces of a metallic strip. Also disclosed is a process for introducing mercury into electron tubes by making use of the above-mentioned mercury-dispensing devices.
