A method for communicating video data on a wireless channel in a packet-switched network includes the steps of operating at a wireless terminal a compression in packets on the video data during a video coding operation, detecting wireless channel conditions and adapting control parameters of the video coding operation to the detected wireless channel conditions. A method adapted to detect the activity of individual partitions within a packetized frame. The method provides for the encoding of those portions of the data stream having higher activity more than those portions having less activity. This enables a protection differentiation depending on the importance of the data within the specific portion of the stream.

Coding a video data stream with unequal error protection based activity

The invention provides signal coding, wherein the signal is source coded to obtain a coded data stream, and source significance information (SSI) is included into the coded data stream, the source significance information (SSI) indicating desired protection rates of respective parts of the coded data stream. In this way, a channel encoder may obtain the source significance information (SSI) from the coded data stream, which is advantageous in presence of intermediate network layers. Preferably, the coded data stream comprises respective packets, the being included in respective headers associated with the respective packets, a given header indicating desired protection rates for respective parts (p) of the associated packet. In order to provide easy detection of the source significance information (SSI), a first header (SSI) is placed at a beginning of the coded data stream. Alternatively, the header (SSI) is provided with an identifier.

Signal coding

The present invention concerns methods and devices for coding and decoding a coded data stream as well as a signal format for a coded data stream. The coded data stream includes at least one high-level data packet having partitions of data () requiring different protection rates. Partition detectors () are inserted between two such partitions by a partition detector inserter, in order to provide guidance for coding the partitions with different protection rates. Information about the code rates used for the different fields is extracted by a controller on the receiving side in order to decode the partitions with the right code rate.

Robust signal coding

In a method of recursive motion vector estimation, a plurality of candidate vectors is generated (E) from stored vectors (PV), one of these candidate vectors is selected (E) to generate a selected vector (d), a plurality of test vectors is generated (REF) from the selected vector (d), one of the test vectors is selected (REF) to generate an output vector (d), and the output vector (d) is stored (MEM).

Motion vector estimation

The invention provides a method of and a device for coding () an image sequence (g(i,j,k)). The device () has a noise filter () for noise filtering () the image sequence (g(i,j,k)), and for regarding the noise filtering () as a rate-distortion optimization problem in order to adapt the response of the noise filter (). In particular, a filter parameter set (C) is determined to adapt the response of the filter () in that the image sequence (g(i,j,k)) is encoded using an optimal bit-budget, which is the bit-budget used for compressing a noise-free image sequence, and the distortion for the given bit-budget is minimized. A solution of the rate-distortion problem is proposed that calculates () the filter parameter set (C) by a Lagrange multiplier method. Separate minimization is used to determine each parameter of the parameter set (C) independently. In a practical embodiment, a spatial adaptive weighted averaging (SAWA) filtering () is used to estimate the bit budget (R) and to pre-filter the image sequence (g(i,j,k)).

An approximation of the noise (z) in the signal (x) is obtained by computing ( ) a difference between the signal (x) and a noise-filtered ( ) version of the signal (x). A kurtosis of the noise is used as a metric for estimating the type of noise. If the estimated type of noise is long-tailed noise, a median filter ( ) is enabled to filter the signal. If the estimated type of noise is Gaussian noise or contaminated Gaussian noise, a spatio-temporal filter ( ) is enabled to filter the signal.
