For grounding or electrically charging the shaft of an electrostatic rotary atomizer working with external or direct charging, there are opposing, annular or spiral-shaped sharp edges in the outer surface of a part of the shaft and in the inner surface of a stationary bearing part at the desired potential, which have different, preferably opposite, thread directions, so that the edges intersect each other at points.

Potential neutralization arrangement for an electrostatic rotary atomizer

An atomizer assembly () drives an atomizing bell () to apply paint onto a part (). The atomizer assembly () includes a core () having at least one paint line () extending therethrough, a turbine device () circumscribing an axis (A) and disposed in the core (), and a turbine unit () surrounding the pain line () and having a shaft () rotatable relative the turbine device () with several turbine blades () connected to the shaft (). A plurality of nozzles () are defined in the turbine device () and are positioned relative a turbine wheel () connected to the shaft () to drive fluid, i.e. gas onto the turbine blades (). An annular wall () extends outwardly from one of the terminal ends of the turbine device () to define a seat () for engaging the core () to maintain a fixed gap between the paint line () and the shaft () and to eliminate contact therebetween.

High speed rotating atomizer assembly

A turbine, e.g., with a blade arrangement, which receives an air flow in the radial direction and which is located on a carrier surface of the turbine wheel, is used as a drive motor for a rotary atomizer. The drive channel, which contains the turbine blades and which is limited by the carrier surface, is also closed on its other side by a cover element, which is attached to the turbine wheel and which rotates with the wheel for increasing efficiency. For an additional increase in efficiency, the inlet for the drive air of the turbine is configured as an ultrasonic nozzle with a cross section that expands continuously up to the opening.

The main needle valve of an electrostatic atomizer has an opto-electronic sensor device with optical waveguides whose faces are opposite a reflecting element of a component moveable with the valve needle for potential-free switch position interrogations.

A plurality of atomizers or other tools are disposed in a mounting plate () in storage places (), respectively. The mounting plate () is rotatable relative a paint robot of a coating installation and has a pneumatic lock or a tool holder () that can only be released automatically during storage of the atomizers by an external control device of the mounting plate.

Tool change system for a machine

A rotational atomizer turbine of the present invention is designed to drive a bell-shaped disk in a rotational atomizer for a coating unit. The rotational atomizer turbine includes a housing, a rotatable turbine wheel with several turbine blades connected to a shaft and rotatably disposed in the housing. A plurality of nozzles are defined in the housing and are positioned relative the turbine wheel to drive fluid, i.e. gas onto the turbine blades. An intermediate chamber formed in the housing is fluidly communicated with and connected to the nozzles to hold gas therein. The intermediate chamber has a first inlet to supply gas. At least a second inlet is defined in the intermediate chamber for delivering gas into the intermediate chamber thereby increasing amount of gas therein to multiply a rotational speed of the rotatable turbine wheel as increased amount of gas is introduced to the turbine blades.

The atomizer (Z) of an electrostatic coating unit contains a dosing pump (DP) connected between the atomization device () and a scrapeable coiled pipe () which serves as a space-saving paint supply vessel and which is also situated in the atomizer. The scraper () is activated by compressed air on one side in order to force the paint material fed to its other side to the dosing pump (DP), which conveys it to the atomization device ().

A change station for atomizer () and other tools that contains a carousel-like rotatable and/or linearly movable mount () is arranged on the wall of the cabin of a coating installation. The arrangement is such that the storage locations of the change station are accessible both to the coating machine () in the cabin and from outside the cabin.

In a coating device with a rotary atomizer, for preventing the condensation of spray cabin air on components cooled by the lower-pressure exhaust air of the drive turbine of the atomizer, a heating device is provided, which can heat air flowing through the atomizer or components in heat-conductive contact with the outlet path of the turbine exhaust air.

For improving external charging in electrostatic atomizers for conductive coating material and for reducing the structural size of the atomizer, particularly for robot applications, the charging electrodes are embedded in a ring part made of insulating material, which is set directly on the outside of the outer housing or forms a part of the outer housing.
