A receiver () is configured to receive an optical transmission, wherein the receiver is configured to determine a plurality of values over time of the quality of the optical transmission. The receiver comprises one or more low pass filter () configured to low pass filter the values of quality of the transmission. Based on the low pass filtered values, the receiver () is configured to determine a FEC code and/or modulation type for a further optical transmission.

Adaptation of forward error correction code and/or modulation

A method for phase noise detection in a MIMO communication system comprises the step of computing an initial estimate of phase using received pilot symbols. A phase follows for interpolating between successive pilot symbol phase estimates to obtain a coarse resolution reference phase estimate. Then, it follows a phase for computing a fine resolution estimate of phase using said coarse resolution phase estimate together with data expressing characteristics of known phase noise processes, applying an expectation maximization (EM) algorithm. The application of the EM algorithm can be further refined using improved symbol decisions from a FEC decoding.

Method and a node for detecting phase noise in MIMO communication systems

A device () for an adaptive modulation communication system is provided. The device () comprises an input device () adapted to receive, from a communication channel, data encoded through a FEC code. A FEC decoder () connected downstream of the input device () is also provided for FEC decoding the received encoded data and providing error information determined by the FEC decoding. The device according to the invention further comprises means for measuring first error information of the encoded data before FEC decoding the received encoded data, and means for measuring second error information determined by the FEC decoder (). Means () for estimating a condition of the communication channel based on both the first error information and the second error information are also provided.

Channel estimation in adaptive modulation systems

A method which makes use of the syndrome information at each iteration, combined with the bit reliability information available at a FEC decoder, to extract the minimum estimated bit error configuration, i.e. the block which is closest to the transmitted codeword during the decoding process, and to select such block if the result at the final decoding iteration has a higher number of estimated bit errors.
