A fixture holds a specimen during electrical discharge machining of the specimen and prevents tensile test samples cut from the specimen from bending or curving during the electrical discharge machining. The fixture has first engagement surfaces that clamp to one end of the specimen and has second engagement surfaces that clamp to the opposite end of the specimen during electrical discharge machining of the specimen. The fixture clamping to opposite ends of the specimen prevents the tensile test samples cut from the specimen from bending during electrical discharge machining of the specimen.

Methods of using micro-specimens for testing an additive manufactured material or a part made from the additive manufactured material. The methods include testing small and large test specimens taken from an additive manufactured part and from a blank constructed from the additive manufactured material. Correction factors based on the test specimens are calculated and applied to a calculated material property of the additive manufactured material.

A test fixture configured to attach to and apply a tensile force to a test specimen. The test fixture may include a first clevis section and a second clevis section that are each configured to be attached to the test specimen. Each of the first and second clevis sections may include a fixed block and a movable block. Connectors connect the clevis sections together and hold the test specimen. The first and second clevis sections may be moved apart to apply a force to the attached test specimen to test one or more properties of the test specimen.

An example method is described that includes providing, for display, a three-dimensional (3D) model of a part. The method also includes receiving, via a graphical user interface, data defining a cutting plane. The cutting plane intersects the 3D model of the part and divides the 3D model into a first portion and a second portion. The method further includes determining a first set of minimum-volume bounding boxes that is tangent to the cutting plane and encloses the first portion of the 3D model, and determining a second set of minimum-volume bounding boxes that is tangent to the cutting plane and encloses the second portion of the 3D model. The method also includes providing a preform geometry for the part. The preform geometry includes the first set of minimum-volume bounding boxes and the second set of minimum-volume bounding boxes.
