A method and device for measuring the position of sections with an absorbing substance in multi-segment filter rods of the tobacco processing industry by measuring a varying shift of the resonance frequency A and/or spread of the resonance line B during movement of the rod in the longitudinal direction, using a microwave resonator, which has a field concentration in a spatial area, wherein this spatial area is smaller in the rod direction than the segment length to be determined, forming a difference quotient &#x394;A of the resonant frequency shift A and/or &#x394;B of the resonance line spread B relative to the longitudinal direction, determining local extreme values of the respective difference quotients, and assigning local extreme values as a position of a transition from a section with higher content of absorbing substance to a section without, or with lower content, of absorbing substance, and vice versa.

Method and apparatus for the measurement of mass or density and/or for the measurement of the humidity in a plurality of portioned units in a non-metallic carrier material, which provides the following: a microwave measuring instrument, consisting of at least one microwave resonator for generating at least one resonance mode in a spatially limited measurement area and an analyzing unit for analyzing at least one variable of the at least one resonance mode, a conveying device for the carrier material, which transports the carrier material with the portioned units through the measurement area, the microwave measuring instrument measures at least one variable of the at least one resonance mode at a time when only the carrier material without portioned unit is in the measurement area, and at a time when the portioned unit is at least partially in the measurement area, the analyzing unit subtracts the variable measured for the carrier material from the measurement values for the portioned unit, and determines a value of the humidity and/or of the mass or density of the portioned unit from at least one difference by way of an input-output map.

The microwave leakage field sensor for measuring moisture and/or density of dielectric materials is distinguished by the fact that it is of essentially rotationally symmetrical design and transmissive for electromagnetic radiation in the axial direction toward at least one side, and that an essentially rotationally symmetrical alternating field of standing waves can be generated in it, the spatial period of which field in the peripheral direction is less than the vacuum wavelength at the frequency of the alternating field.
