The data exchange between two or more navigation devices allows a highly automated coordination of routes of navigation devices. The calculation of a route may be based on the GPS data and additionally on the positional data received from another navigation system to provide, for example, for a rendezvous function with a minimum activity from the users of the navigation devices.

Method and system for coordinating the routes of a plurality of navigation devices

A system for use in a motor vehicle includes a wireless receiver that receives, over a wireless communication channel, supplemental information representative of the characteristics of the contents of a playback media, and provides received supplemental information indicative thereof. A playback device receives the received supplemental information and stores the received supplemental information in a non-volatile memory device. The playback unit may generate a request for supplement information in response to and indicative of a playback media inserted into the playback unit. The system may also include a wireless transmitter that receives the request and transmits the received request over the communication channel. In another embodiment, a radio connection is established between a computing device and the wireless receiver. The computing device transmits characteristic data of selected data media over the radio connection to the wireless receiver, which provides the received data to the playback unit that stores the received data in a memory device for subsequent on-demand retrieval and display. In this embodiment, an operator can transfer to the motor vehicle the characteristic data stored in the computing device (e.g., personal computer) relating to selected data media.

Method for operating a playback unit in a vehicle, for playing back data stored on a data medium

A speech dialog control module enhances user operation of a speech dialog system by translating an input signal unrecognizable by a speech dialog system into a recognizable language. A speech dialog control module includes an input device that receives a speech signal in a first language. A controller receives the input signal and generates a control instruction that corresponds to the received input signal. The control instruction has a language that is different from the input signal. A speech-synthesis unit converts the control instruction into an output speech signal. An output device outputs the output speech signal.

Speech dialog control module

A system is presented for utilizing data in a mobile device in real-time and without the need for additional hardware. The system allows real-time processing of highly-compressed data that would otherwise require processing power in excess of that available from the system, or would otherwise not be possible without additional hardware. The system generally includes a processing device that receives the data in a highly compressed format, and includes a preprocessor that pre-processes the data to at least partially decode the data into a second compressed format. The processing device also includes a decompressor that fully decompresses the preprocessed data as needed by the system. The processing device may also include one or more memories for storing the preprocessed data until it is needed by the system.

System for providing data in a mobile device

A telephone system for a motor vehicle includes a transmit/receive unit that transmits data over a wireless communication channel, and receives data over the wireless communication channel and provides a received signal. The system also includes a control unit that communicates with the transmit/receive unit; a first memory device; and a computing device. The computing device receives the received signal and automatically stores the received signal data in the first memory device when the telephone system is configured in a stand-by mode, which allows incoming data to be stored in the memory device while selectively preventing the transmission of outgoing calls originated by the control unit to the transmit/receive unit. Data can be sent to the motor vehicle telephone system and can be stored there for retrieval by the operator when he returns to the vehicle. The data may include audio and/or video data.

Motor vehicle telephone system

An emergency call system is presented, which when an emergency call is initiated, instantaneously retrieves and transmits an identification key using an established communication link with a communication network. Therefore, the emergency call system does not need to unregister from the established communication link and establish a new communication link in order to transmit the identification key. The system includes an emergency call device, which includes a mobile communication device for communicating with the communication network, a regular-use data module storing non-emergency use information, an emergency data module storing emergency use information, such as an identification key, a data retrieving module for retrieving information from the emergency and/or regular-use data modules. When the emergency call device is implemented in a vehicle, the data retrieving module for the regular-use and/or emergency data modules may be in communication with a multimedia device via a local communication network.

Making an emergency call from a pre-established connection

A system for use in a motor vehicle includes a wireless receiver that receives, over a wireless communication channel, supplemental information representative of the characteristics of the contents of a playback media, and provides received supplemental information indicative thereof. A playback device receives the received supplemental information and stores the received supplemental information in a non-volatile memory device. The playback unit may generate a request for supplement information in response to and indicative of a playback media inserted into the playback unit. The system may also include a wireless transmitter that receives the request and transmits the received request over the communication channel. In one embodiment, after the data medium has been inserted into the playback unit, the wireless transmitter (e.g., a car telephone) establishes a radio connection to a data server, and at least part of the characteristic data stored on the inserted data medium are read by the playback unit and are transmitted from the wireless transmitter to the data server, which compares these characteristic data with stored data to identify the data medium. After identifying the data medium, the data server transmits supplemental information to the playback unit, which stores the information in a memory device for on-demand retrieval and display. In another embodiment, a radio connection is established between a computing device and the wireless receiver. The computing device transmits characteristic data of selected data media over the radio connection to the wireless receiver, which provides the received data to the playback unit that stores the received data in a memory device for subsequent on-demand retrieval and display. In this embodiment, an operator can transfer to the motor vehicle the characteristic data stored in the computing device (e.g., personal computer) relating to selected data media.

In a multimedia system for a vehicle, a plurality of multimedia units are connected to one another by an optical bus laid as a ring line. An interface unit, situated at an arbitrary point in the ring line or integrated into one of the multimedia units establishes a radio connection between the multimedia system and an external unit, which for example transmits traffic information to the multimedia system.
