The procedural approach allows for the diagnosis to occur without a diagnostic intervention into the operation of the internal combustion engine and without an intervention into an open-loop control, which if need be is present, for the metering of a reagent substance, which is introduced into the exhaust gas region of the internal combustion engine to convert at least one exhaust gas component.
