A gas separator for removing contaminants from a crankcase gas which is produced during operation of an internal combustion engine includes a centrifugal rotor with a plurality of separation discs for separating the contaminants from the crankcase gas, the centrifugal rotor being arranged inside a stationary rotor housing having a gas inlet for conducting crankcase gas to the centrifugal rotor and a gas outlet for discharging the cleaned crankcase gas from the centrifugal rotor, and an electric motor which is arranged for rotation of the centrifugal rotor about a rotational axis, and A gear device is arranged between the electric motor and the centrifugal rotor, the gear device having a gear ratio arranged to increase the rotational speed of the centrifugal rotor in relation to the electric motor.

Crankcase gas separator

A device for cleaning of polluted gas from a combustion engine, includes a centrifugal separator with a centrifuge rotor arranged to cause the polluted gas to rotate. The centrifuge rotor comprises a stack of truncated conical separating discs disposed at mutual spacing so they delimit intermediate spaces between them for the gas to flow through. An outlet chamber is disposed centrally within the stack of separating discs, whereby the centrifuge rotor is configured for counterflow separation. The centrifugal separator comprises a gas outlet which communicates with the outlet chamber. The stack of separating discs is disposed for rotation in a space formed within the combustion engine and arranged to receive the polluted gas, to which end the intermediate spaces between the separating discs communicate directly with the space, and the gas outlet is arranged to conduct the cleaned gas out from the space through a wall which delimits the space.

Centrifugal separator

The invention relates to a centrifugal separator for cleaning of gas from solid or liquid particles suspended therein which are of greater density than the gas. A main object of the present invention is to accomplish a centrifugal separator which does not have said inactive regions and thereby achieves efficient separation of particulate contaminants from a gas. This object is achieved by the centrifugal separator initially defined, which is characterised in that the interspaces between the separation discs at least at their radially outer parts are substantially open for flow of the gas in the circumferential direction and that mutually adjacent separation discs are arranged at mutual spacing such that rotation of the rotor causes a pumping action in the interspaces, which pumping action drives the gas from the gas inlet, through the interspaces between the separation discs and out via the gas outlet.

The invention refers to a device and a method for cleaning a gas containing particulate impurities. The device includes a main separator having an inlet for the gas, an outlet for the gas and a rotating member provided between the inlet and the outlet. The rotating member is adapted to bring the gas to rotate for separating by means of centrifugal forces a main amount of the particulate impurities from the gas, wherein a rest amount of the particulate impurities remains in the gas. The device also includes an additional separator adapted to separate substantially the whole rest amount. The additional separator includes an electrostatic filter.

Device and a method for cleaning of a gas

In a centrifugal separator for cleaning gases generated by an internal combustion engine a housing defines an interior separation chamber. A centrifugal rotor is coupled for rotation to the housing and extends into the separation chamber. A drainage chamber is positioned adjacent the separation chamber and is delimited therefrom by a partition wall. A flow path is provided through which oil, separated from gases generated by the internal combustion engine and collecting on the partition wall, can travel from the separation chamber to the drainage chamber. A pump wheel is coupled to a shaft portion defined by the rotor and extends radially outwardly therefrom. During operation the oil, upon exiting the separation chamber, contacts the pump wheel. Centrifugal forces generated due to the rotation of the pump wheel cause the oil to be thrown into the drainage chamber. The pump wheel also minimizes the potential for oil resident in the drainage chamber to re-enter the separation chamber.

Centrifugal separator for cleaning gas generated by an internal combustion engine and a method for operating the same

A centrifugal separator has a centrifugal rotor that is rotatable about a vertical axis and has both a rotor body for separation of two liquids, having different densities, and a pumping member that is designed to pump via the outside of a conical body a mixture of said two liquids into the rotor body from a surface layer of a liquid body situated below the rotor body.

In a centrifugal separator, the rotor of which is adapted to be driven by means of a gaseous driving fluid, the rotor itself supports a ring of turbine blades extending around the rotational axis of the rotor. A stationary nozzle is adapted to direct a flow of the driving fluid towards the ring of turbine members. After the driving fluid has passed between the turbine blades and has influenced them for driving of the centrifugal rotor, it enters a reversing chamber formed by a stationary reversing member. In the reversing chamber the driving fluid is caused to change its direction and is then conducted again towards the ring of turbine members in order to be utilized a second time for driving of the centrifugal rotor.

Centrifugal separator having a rotor and driving means thereof

In a vehicle air is compressed for being used in the brake system of the vehicle, for instance. In the compressor, used for the compression, the air is contaminated with oil and solid particles. In order to be relieved from these particles, before the air is conveyed through a drying filter, the compressed is brought to rotation by means of a rotating member in a centrifugal separator. The rotating member may advantageously include a pile of conical separation discs forming flow passages between each other for the compressed air to be cleaned. By means of an efficient cleaning of the compressed air from particles the life time of the drying filter may be increased.

Method of treating air on board on a vehicle, and a device for use when performing the method

A centrifugal separator has a centrifuge rotor and a casing, the casing forming an outer space for the rotor. The rotor is rotatable around a rotary axis and within the casing. The rotor includes a rotor wall, which defines an outer periphery of the rotor and encloses an inner space, an inlet, which extends through the rotor wall and permits feeding of a product to the inner space, and a number of outlets, which extend through the rotor wall and are arranged to permit intermittent discharge of a separated product from the inner space to the outer space. The outlets are distributed around the periphery of the rotor. The number of outlets is uneven, and a valve member extends around the rotor wall to define a space between the wall and the valve member at the level of the outlets.

An apparatus for cleaning of crankcase gas coming from an internal combustion engine can be carried by and be releasably coupled to the combustion engine. For this purpose the apparatus comprises an adapter element, which can be connected with the combustion engine, and a housing, which can be releasably coupled to the adapter element and which delimits a separation chamber. The housing supports in the separation chamber a centrifugal rotor that is rotatable about a vertical rotational axis and is arranged for cleaning of the crankcase gas. The centrifugal rotor has a drive shaft extending downwards through a bottom in the separation chamber and into a drive chamber, in which the drive shaft carries a turbine wheel. A nozzle is arranged to spray pressurized lubricating oil against the turbine wheel for rotation thereof and of the centrifugal rotor. The adapter element is intended to abut against the combustion engine by means of an abutment surface, which has a first opening for receiving pressurized lubricating oil from the combustion engine and a second opening for returning to the combustion engine from the drive chamber lubricating oil having been used for driving of the centrifugal rotor. Said first opening communicates through a channel in the adapter element with the nozzle and said second opening communicates through an outlet channel in the adapter element with the drive chamber.

Apparatus for cleaning of crankcase gas

In connection with cleaning of gas from particles suspended therein and being heavier than the gas the gas is caused to rotate in a chamber delimited in a stationary housing, so that the particles by centrifugal force are separated from the gas and are thrown towards a stationary housing. The rotation of the gas is accomplished by means of a rotor, which includes a stack of conical separation discs arranged coaxially with each other and concentrically with the rotational axis of the rotor. The gas to be cleaned is caused to flow through interspaces between the separation discs, while they are rotating, the particles by the centrifugal force being brought into contact with the insides of the separation discs. In contact with the insides of the separation discs the particles first move along the generatrices of the separation discs and then move along inclined guiding members, which are arranged in contact with said insides. The guiding members collect particles moving across different sectors of the separation discs and conduct them to separate areas distributed around the surrounding edges of the separation discs. From these areas the particles in an agglomerated or coalesced form are thrown away from the separation discs towards the stationary housing.

Method and an apparatus for cleaning of gas

For cleaning of crankcase gas produced by an internal combustion engine use is made of a centrifugal rotor, that is journalled in a frame through two axially separated bearings. The centrifugal rotor is caused to rotate by use of part of it also as a rotor of an electrical motor. The electrical motor has a stator, which is kept non-rotating and is charged with electric current for rotation of the centrifugal rotor, the centrifugal rotor being kept journalled during its rotation only in the two bearings.

Method of cleaning crankcase gas and a gas cleaning separator

Gases produced by a combustion engine, e.g. crankcase gases, are conducted through a separation chamber formed and surrounded by a centrifugal rotor, by means of which the gases are caused to rotate, so that particles suspended in the gases are separated by means of centrifugal force. The centrifugal rotor is caused to rotate by means of a pressure fluid that is generated by means of the combustion engine.
