The application relates to a novel process for bleaching alkyl polyglycosides having C.sub.8 - to C.sub.20 -alkyl groups in aqueous solution using peroxy compounds. The bleaching is carried out in a tubular reactor.

In a process for preparing alkyl glycosides having C.sub.8 to C.sub.20 alkyl radicals by glycosidation and transglycosidation or by direct glycosidation, a saccharide syrup having a dextrose equivalent of 90 to 95 is used as starting material. Products having a very low mean degree of glycosidation are achieved by filtering off oligosaccharide during the reaction and/or afterwards.

The invention relates to a process for bleaching aqueous surfactant solutions using hydrogen peroxide, specific decomposition of the unreacted hydrogen peroxide and/or oxidizing secondary products formed therefrom being performed using enzymes. The preparation of alkyl oligoglycosides by transglycosidation of C.sub.2 to C.sub.6 alkyl glycosides using C.sub.8 to C.sub.20 fatty alcohols is improved by the fact that the fatty alcohol is preheated to at least 80.degree. In this process, the fatty alcohol--alkyl polyglycoside solutions are first adjusted to a pH of 10 to 14 with alkali, after which their temperature is maintained at 60.degree. to 120.degree. C. for at least 2 hours. The fatty alcohol is then removed by distillation in vacuo at a reduced pH of 7 to 9.

Alkyl glycosides and alkyl polyglycosides are prepared by reacting saccharides and alcohols having 12 to 20 C atoms by acid catalysis in the presence of sodium hypophosphite and up to 1.3% by water, relative to the total of saccharides and alcohols, the molar ratio of saccharide to alcohol ranging from 1:5 to 1:10; and, after reaction is complete, neutralizing the reaction medium with an alkali metal hydroxide dissolved in an alcohol having 1 to 4 C atoms.
