A distributed antenna system comprises a plurality of antennas and a multi-port hub. The multi-port hub comprises an interface to a telecommunications network and a plurality of transceivers. The multi-port hub is configured to operate in a first mode ('normal' mode) in which the multi-port hub receives a downlink communications signal via the interface and distributes the downlink communications signal to the plurality of antennas using a selected downlink transmission frequency within a downlink frequency range and in which the multi-port hub receives uplink communications signals from the plurality of antennas at a selected uplink receive frequency. The multi-port hub is also configured to operate in a second mode ('listening' mode) in which the multi-port hub receives communications signals from the plurality of antennas at one or more frequencies within the downlink frequency range. The transmission frequency for the first mode (&#x201c;normal&#x201d; mode) may be selected based on field strength of the signals received in the second mode (&#x201c;listening&#x201d; mode).

System for and method of configuring distributed antenna communications system

The present invention provides a method and apparatus for localization of a mobile device in a distributed antenna communications system. In accordance with an embodiment of the invention, a distributed antenna system includes a plurality of distributed antennas that are communicatively coupled to a hub. A mobile communications device to be located is communicatively coupled to the hub via one or more of the antennas. The method for locating the mobile device comprises: receiving a message at the hub that identifies the mobile device to be located; discriminating among communications signals received from each of the distributed antennas using a channel and a spreading code to identify a signal from the mobile device; identifying messages from the mobile device to be located; and determining which of the antennas is closest to the mobile device to be located by monitoring received signal strength of the identified signal.

Localization of a mobile device in distributed antenna communications system

One embodiment is directed to a distributed antenna system that comprises a hub to receive a plurality of downlink transceiver signals output from a plurality of transceiver units and to send a plurality of uplink transceiver signals to the plurality of transceiver units. The plurality of downlink transceiver signals has overlapping frequencies and contains different communication content. The distributed antenna system further comprises a plurality of distributed antenna units, each located at a respective a remote location. The hub is configured to route a respective downlink transport signal to each of a plurality of distributed antennas, wherein each of the downlink transport signals is derived from one of the plurality of downlink transceiver signals received at the hub. Each of the distributed antenna units is configured to transmit a respective downlink radio frequency signal derived from the downlink transport signal that is routed to that distributed antenna unit.

Distributed antenna communications system

A distributed antenna system comprises a base transceiver station, a plurality of distributed antenna units and a signal routing apparatus. The base transceiver station has a plurality of output ports that generate a plurality of downlink signals having overlapping transmit frequencies and containing different communication content. The different communication content is directed toward each of a plurality of mobile units. The base transceiver station also has at least one uplink receive port that receives an uplink signal. The uplink signal includes communication content received from at least one of the mobile units. The plurality of distributed antenna units have coverage areas that are non-overlapping or only partially overlapping. The signal routing apparatus routes the downlink signals to the plurality of distributed antennas such that each of the plurality of downlink signals are transmitted by one or more of the distributed antennas and each distributed antenna only transmits one of the downlink signals.

The present invention provides a distributed antenna communications system and methods of implementing a distributed antenna communications system. In accordance with an embodiment of the invention, a distributed antenna system comprises: a base station configured for communication with a telecommunications network; a multi-port repeater hub connected to the base station to receive a communications signal from the base station and to distribute the communications signal to a plurality of ports of the multi-port repeater hub, the multi-port repeater hub comprising a scanner for scanning a plurality of frequency channels to identify one or more channels of the communications signal received from the base station; and a plurality of antenna units, each coupled to one of the ports of the multi-port repeater hub.

Distributed antenna communications system and methods of implementing thereof

The present invention comprises systems for and methods of providing dedicated capacity in a wireless cellular network. In an embodiment, a system for providing dedicated capacity in a cellular network comprises: a first base station positioned at a first location and being communicatively coupled to a telephone network, the first base station having an outdoor cellular antenna for forming a local coverage area, a second base station positioned at the first location and being communicatively coupled to the telephone network; and an indoor cellular antenna for forming a coverage area at a second location. The second location is geographically remote from the first location and the indoor cellular antenna is communicatively coupled to the second base station such that mobile communications equipment located within the coverage area at the second location are communicatively coupled to the telephone network via the indoor cellular antenna and the second base station.

System for and method of for providing dedicated capacity in a cellular network

The present invention is a system for and a method of providing one or more remote coverage areas for wireless communications. In an embodiment, a system for providing a remote coverage area for wireless communications comprises a local system that generates a first radio communication signal and a remote system located geographically remote from the local system. The remote system comprises a first converter that converts the first radio communication signal to a stream of data packets, a network that receives the stream of data packets from the first converter; and a second converter that receives the stream of data packets from the network and generates the remote coverage area by converting the stream of data packets to a second radio communication signal. The remote coverage area may be located indoors.
