An adjustable steering column for a motor vehicle may comprise a rotatable steering shaft that has a shaft part that can be displaced axially along its axis of rotation. The shaft part may be rotatably mounted in a jacket tube that is mounted in an axially sliding manner in a guide box held on a retaining part fixed to the vehicle body and can be displaced by means of an electric motor. The adjustable steering column is improved with respect to a small installation space of the electrical adjustment in conjunction with high strength of the steering column. A gear rack may be attached to an outer face of the jacket tube. Also, the electric motor may be fastened to the guide box and may drive a worm gear that protrudes through an opening in the guide box towards the jacket tube and meshes with the gear rack.

Electrically length-adjustable steering column for a motor vehicle

A steering column for a motor vehicle may include a supporting unit and a displacement unit. The supporting unit may be connectable to a chassis of the motor vehicle, and the displacement unit may be displaceable relative to the supporting unit along a displacement path in a crash event. The steering column may further include an energy absorption element positioned between the supporting unit and the displacement unit. In a crash event, the energy absorption element may absorb energy over the displacement path. In some examples, the energy absorption element includes local laser solidifications that help control an energy absorption level of the energy absorption element.

A steering column for a motor vehicle may include a support element, an adjusting element that is displaceable relative to the support element for the rotatable mounting of a steering spindle, and a locking device for locking the adjusting element relative to the support element in a crash event. The locking device may include a blocking element disposed on the support element, which can be brought into engagement with an engagement part of the adjusting element. Further, a switching element may be provided for bringing about the engaging of the blocking element in the engagement part in a crash event. The switching element may bring about the engaging based on its mass inertia.
