Partially fluorinated ureas and amides

The invention is a process useful for providing a treated support comprising a porous nanoweb coating wherein the treated support is characterized by a biofilm cell count of less than 50% that of an untreated porous support control. The process is useful for modifying porous materials, such as filter media and barrier fabrics to provide resistance to biofouling. The porous nanoweb coating is comprised of fibrous structures derived from gelation and drying of supramolecular assemblies of non-covalently bonded organogelators. Typical organogelators useful in the invention include those that assemble via hydrogen bonding and &#x3c0;-stacking.

Method for providing resistance to biofouling in a porous support

One aspect of the invention is a compound of formula (I)R-[L-(CHS)CHR]&#x2003;&#x2003;(I)wherein Ris a divalent organic group having 2 to 40 carbon atoms; L is a linking group selected from &#x2014;NHC(O)NH&#x2014; or &#x2014;C(O)NH&#x2014; wherein the left side of the linking group is bonded to R; p is an integer of 0 or 1; q is an integer of 2 to 10; r is an integer of 1 to 10; and Ris a linear or branched C-Cperfluoroalkyl group. Other aspects of the invention are a composite structure comprising a porous support and a porous nanoweb comprising fibrous structures comprised of one or more compositions of formula (I) and a method for making said composite structures.

Partially fluorinated amino acid derivatives are provided that are useful as organogelators and surface treatment materials to provide oil- and water- repellency properties to substrates. Also provided are composite materials comprising a porous support and a porous nanoweb. The porous nanoweb contains fibrous structures of about 10 nm to about 1000 nm effective average fiber diameter.
