A continuous process for the production of an elastomer-modified thermoplastic is disclosed. The process entails (i) obtaining graft elastomer (D) having residual moisture content of 1 to 50 wt. %, particularly 5 to 50 wt. %, particularly preferably 10 to 40 wt. %, (ii) introducing (D) and thermoplastic resin (B) through an inlet to a reactor operating under conditions calculated to melt (D) and (B) and to remove organic volatile components C) to produce a molten blend, the reactor being equipped with a plurality of kneading bars, that convey a portion of the molten blend towards the reactor inlet.

Process and device for the production of elastomer-modified thermoplastics

A molding composition having good surface gloss, high elongation at break and good thermoplastic processability is disclosed. The composition contains (A) a graft polymer that is obtained by free-radical polymerization of resin-forming vinyl monomers in the presence of rubber in latex form, (B) a copolymer of styrene and acrylonitrile and an optional (C) a resin selected from the group consisting of polycarbonates, polyester-carbonates, polyesters and polyamides. The preparation of the graft polymer is characterized in that (i) before the start of the grafting polymerization reaction the rubber latex is brought to a pH of 9 to 11, (ii) the redox initiator components are employed in amounts of 0.1 to 2.5 wt. % (based on the monomers metered in) and (iii) during the entire grafting polymerization reaction the pH remains constant&plusmn;0.5 and in the range of 11.0 to 8.8, and (iv) the temperature difference between the start and end of the reaction is at least 10&deg; C.

Thermoplastic molding materials based on special graft rubber components

A process for working up polymer components prepared by emulsion polymerization is disclosed. The process is characterized in that coagulation of the aqueous polymer latex present after emulsion polymerization is performed using a combination of A) an aqueous solution of at least one salt selected from the group consisting of sodium chloride, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, aluminum chloride, sodium sulfate, magnesium sulfate and aluminum sulfate, B) an aqueous solution of at least one salt of an acid selected from the group consisting of hypophosphorous acid (H PO ), phosphorous acid (H PO or HPO ) and ascorbic acid and optionally C) an aqueous dilute acid selected from the group consisting of sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid and acetic acid.

Process for working up emulsion polymers

The invention relates to a process for the preparation of graft rubber polymers of the ABS type by emulsion polymerization according to the so-called fed batch process, in which latexes having markedly reduced residual monomer contents are obtained, and to compositions containing the mentioned graft rubber polymers.
