The light receiver is configured to output a reception signal based on a received amount of light. The sensor assembly further comprises an evaluation circuit which is configured to generate a movement signal based on the reception signal or a signal derived from the reception signal, and an oscillating body which is movably mounted in such a way that a movement of the oscillating body results in a change in a property of the light path. The sensor assembly is arranged such that the activity of the user causes the oscillating body to oscillate.

A sensor assembly for an electrically adjustable piece of furniture having at least one actuator for adjusting a component and a control for the actuator comprises a light transmitter and a light receiver which are coupled to one another via an optical light path. An aperture element which is configured to at least partially cover the light path and which is mounted in a movable manner with respect to the light path in such a way that a change in a position of the aperture element results in a change in the covering of the light path. An evaluation circuit regulates a light quantity emitted by the light transmitter to a reference quantity by means of a control signal and generates a deformation signal based on the control signal or on a signal derived from the control signal. The aperture element converts a deformation or movement of the component into a change of position of the aperture element relative to the light path.

The distance measurement is based on a time-of-flight measurement of a wave. The controller is arranged to determine an absolute position of each actuator from the respectively measured distance.

A force sensor is operatively connected to the elastic member and serves to detect a directional force value corresponding to a force applied to the handle section. A touch sensor is used to detect a touch value as a function of the user touching the handle section. A communication unit is arranged to transmit the force value and the touch value or a signal derived from the force value and the touch value to a controller of the piece of furniture.

A control module is designed for detecting an actuation of one of the switching surfaces based on sensor signals delivered by the sensor surfaces and for generating an actuation signal for the furniture control based on a detected actuation. The sensor module and the control module are arranged in a housing of the operating element, wherein the operating panel forms a cover of the housing.
