Implementations relate to a method for establishing an end-to-end encrypted data communication link between a portable medical apparatus and a data-management device. The method comprises at least the following steps: out-of-band transmission of a public key from the medical apparatus to the data-management device, wherein the transmission does not take place via Bluetooth; setting up an encrypted Bluetooth data communication link between the medical apparatus and the data-management device; transmitting a public key from the data-management device to the medical apparatus via the Bluetooth link that has been set up; calculating a combined key on the data-management device and on the medical apparatus; setting up an end-to-end encrypted link between the medical apparatus and the data-management device using the combined key, such as a symmetrical, key.

The safety and reliability of drug delivery systems are improved by the use of smartphones for calculating safety critical delivery parameters. A drug delivery device is adapted to perform a drug delivery operation based on an unconfirmed drug delivery instructions determined by a processing unit of a control device by applying a basic mathematic operation to control device input data. The drug delivery device comprises a communication module to receive, from the control device, the basic mathematic operation and the control device input data, and a redundancy module to determine a redundant drug delivery instructions by applying the basic mathematic operation to the control device input data received from the control device. The drug delivery device is adapted to prevent execution of the drug delivery operation if the unconfirmed drug delivery instructions and the redundant drug delivery instructions are found, by a comparator module, to conflict.

A device and method for delivering insulin to a patient is disclosed. The method includes receiving an amount of insulin to deliver to a patient and beginning delivery of the insulin to the patient. The method further includes monitoring the delivery of the insulin to determine whether the insulin pump is able to deliver the entire amount of insulin and maintaining a timer until the insulin pump recommences the delivery of the insulin. The method includes comparing an amount of time indicated by the timer to a threshold. The method further includes generating a first insulin delivery record indicating that a first amount of insulin was delivered when the amount of time indicated by the timer is less than the threshold and a second insulin record indicating that a second amount of insulin was delivered when the amount of time indicated by the timer is greater than the threshold.

An ambulatory infusion device comprising a replaceable energy storage for electrically powering its functional units is presented. Control units provide to a monitoring system data about energy consuming activities or consumed energy by the functional units. Based on this data, the monitoring system determines energy consumed by the functional units and triggers measurement of the voltage of the energy storage at a point in time which depends on the determined energy consumed in a time interval preceding the point in time. Adapting the time of measurement to the actual energy drawn from the energy storage makes it possible to detect reliably and early a low energy state of any conventional standard battery, regardless of its electrochemical design and electrical behavior.

An ambulatory infusion device for infusion of a liquid drug into a patient's body over an extended period of time and methods thereof are disclosed. The device includes a sensor assembly, which produces a sensor assembly output based on an infusion characteristic of the ambulatory infusion device and based on a supply voltage/current, and a supply unit which is coupled to a sensor of the sensor assembly and generates the supply voltage/current. A sensor testing unit detects a failure of the sensor assembly, wherein the sensor testing unit is coupled to the sensor assembly and the supply unit, and the sensor testing unit carries out a sensor testing sequence. The sensor testing sequence includes controlling the supply unit so as to produce a variation of the supply voltage/current, and determining whether the variation of the supply voltage/current produces a corresponding variation of the sensor assembly output.

The data generating circuit is connected to the handover memory via a first data line and the communication unit is connected to the handover memory via a second data line. The first device comprises a change-over switch closing the first data line and interrupting the second data line in a first switched state and interrupting the first data line and closing the second data line in a second switched state, said change-over switch changing between the first and second switched state without communication with the data generating circuit.
