A method for determining ignition angles for individual cylinders in a multicylinder internal combustion engine forms the ignition angles for the individual cylinders, based on values of a basic family of characteristics (KF,) which applies to all cylinders, as a function of a knocking behavior of the internal combustion engine on the basis of a first (fast) and second (slow) adaptation loop. Once the internal combustion engine has been stopped, the values that are present are used in a third adaptation loop to form a family of characteristics (KF,) which is applicable to all cylinders (z), and a shift value (ZW,(z)) for each cylinder. These are stored in a non-volatile manner.

A method for emergency control of an internal combustion engine includes simulating signals (pulses or tooth signals are reference signals) of a crankshaft transducer from certain memorized variables, in the event of a failure of the crankshaft transducer. The memorized variables are the total number of teeth, angle lengths of segments (teeth, gaps) disposed on a crankshaft transducer disk, a transit time of the segments of the crankshaft transducer disk, and memorized crankshaft positions corresponding to edges of the segments.

A method for detecting combustion misfires includes calculating engine roughness values from fluctuations in crankshaft rpm, comparing the values with threshold values, and forming cylinder groups having an increased likelihood of misfiring. During a period of observation, each engine roughness value calculated for each cylinder is separately compared with a first threshold value and with a second threshold value being reduced in comparison with the first threshold value, a first counting sum associated with the cylinder is formed if the first threshold value is exceeded, and a second counting sum associated with the cylinder is formed if the second threshold value is exceeded. After the period of observation has elapsed, if the total sums of all of the first or second counting sums exceed a predeterminable total sum limit value, group sums are formed for each cylinder group from the second counting sums, and a conclusion is drawn as to the occurrence of a multi-cylinder misfire in the group having the higher group sum if the second counting sums of the individual cylinders in a group are approximately of equal magnitude, and conversely, if the second counting sums of the various cylinders are different, a conclusion is drawn as to a single-cylinder combustion misfire for the cylinder having the highest first counting sum, if the total sum of the first counting sums exceeds a predeterminable total sum limit value.

A method for distinguishing sources of error in a mixture formation or mixture regulating system of an internal combustion engine having an exhaust system with a lambda regulator and a heated lambda sensor is disclosed. A value of a sensor voltage is continuously measured. The value of the sensor voltage is compared with a lower diagnostic limit value and an upper diagnostic limit value. A lambda regulator value of the lambda regulator is varied in an enriching direction to a maximum lambda regulation limit if the lower diagnostic limit value fails to be attained, and the lambda regulator value is varied in a leaning down direction to a minimum lambda regulation limit if the upper diagnostic limit value is exceeded. The heating output of the sensor heater is raised after a time period has elapsed during which there is no departure from the maximum lambda regulation limit, and the heating output of the sensor heater is lowered after a time period has elapsed during which there is no departure from the minimum lambda regulation limit. A conclusion is drawn that there is a permanently lean mixture formation error if the lower diagnostic limit value for permanently lean mixtures is exceeded again, and a conclusion is drawn that there is a permanently rich mixture formation error if the upper diagnostic limit value fails to be attained again. Otherwise a sensor error is detected.

A method for operating the internal combustion engine under full load includes continuously detecting and comparing the output signal of the lambda sensor with a rich and a lean threshold value, with the lambda control switched off, releasing the lambda control for a selectable number of mixture state changes, if the output signal of the lambda sensor falls below the lean threshold value during a period of time being greater than a preset value, and keeping the lambda control released until a mean value of the lambda control value indicates a rich main mixture.

A method for controlling knocking in internal combustion engines includes determining a measurement window for each ignition cycle. A sensor signal of a knock sensor is scanned within the measurement window at a predetermined scanning frequency to form scanning values. A knock threshold is formed from a noise value calculated by sliding mean-value formation from a given number of previous knock values. The digital knock values are compared with the knock threshold.
