An apparatus for transmitting and receiving signals in a wireless telecommunication system and to a method for transmitting random access bursts in such an apparatus. The apparatus includes a transmitter for transmitting random access bursts, a receiver for receiving acknowledgement information confirming a successful transmission of a random access burst, a decision unit for deciding if acknowledgement information has been received, and a control unit for randomly choosing a time point for an attempt to retransmit said random access burst from an interval if no acknowledgement information has been received after a random access burst had been transmitted.

Random access burst transmission scheme

The present invention proposes communication devices () and a method for transmitting and receiving random access bursts in a random access channel of a digital telecommunication system. Thereby, a random access burst comprising a preamble part for acquiring a part of said random access channel and at least one message part for transmitting data in said acquired part of the random access channel is generated, whereby the number of message parts depends on an amount of data to be transmitted in the message parts. In case that two or more message parts are generated, each preceding message part comprises a continuation indicator indicating a succeeding message part. After transmission of such a random access burst, the continuation indicator is detected and a further part of the random access channel is reserved for the succeeding message part. Advantageously, the random access channel comprises a number of random access slots being divided into a first section containing contention based random access slots and a second section containing reservation based random access slots, whereby the preamble part of a random access burst comprising two or more message parts is transmitted in said second section. The present invention has the advantage that a higher amount of random access data can be transmitted within one random access burst in a simple way without enhancing the contention-based access to the random access channel.

Transmission of random access bursts with at least one message part

The present invention relates to an apparatus for transmitting and receiving signals in a wireless telecommunication system and to a method for transmitting random access bursts in such an apparatus. The apparatuscomprises transmitting meansfor transmitting random access bursts, receiving meansfor receiving acknowledgement information confirming a successful transmission of a random access burst, decision means for deciding if acknowledgement information has been received, and control meansfor randomly choosing a time point for an attempt to retransmit said random access burst from an interval if no acknowledgement information has been received after a random access burst had been transmitted, whereby the control means sets the length of the interval depending on the number of unsuccessful attempts to transmit a random access burst. The proposed backoff scheme provides an improved performance and increased system stability without the need for a collision detection on the network side. Further, the proposed backoff scheme supports different priority classes for the transmission of random access bursts.

The present invention relates to a communication device () for transmitting and receiving data in a communication system and a corresponding communication method. In the communication system, which can be a wireless or a wired communication system, a random access channel is provided, which comprises a plurality of access resources. The access resources are divided in at least two access resource groups, each access resource groups corresponding to a different access service class with a respective access probability. The communication device () according to the present invention, comprises selecting means () for randomly selecting an access resource from an access resource group corresponding to the current access service class of the communication device (), transmitting means () for transmitting a random access burst in said selected access resource and detecting means () for detecting a specific event, whereby the current access service class of the communication device () is changed into another access service class when said specific event is detected by the detecting means (). The present invention proposes a simple and flexible scheme for the adaptation of the performance of a communication device () in the random access procedure in the case of certain events.

Event triggered change of access service class in a random access channel

The present invention relates to a communication device and a communication method for transmitting and receiving data in a communication system, in which a random access channel with a plurality of access resources is provided. The communication device () comprises selecting means () for randomly selecting an access resource from said plurality of access resources on the basis of an access probability distribution being allocated to said communication device (), said access probability distribution defining the probability of a random access to the random access resources, whereby at least two access resources have a different access probability, and transmitting means () for transmitting a random access burst in the randomly selected access resource. The use of an access probability distribution allows a very flexible and effective way of accessing the random access channel of the communication system, which may be a wired or a wireless communication system.

Prioritisation method for users randomly accessing a common communication channel
