Presented herein are techniques for generating a combinatory microphone signal from sounds captured at a microphone array. More specifically, sound signals captured by a microphone array are used to generate first and second directional signals. A cross-power signal is computed from the first and second directional signals. The cross-power signal is converted into an amplitude domain output signal, and a phase of the amplitude domain output signal is reconstructed in order to generate a combinatory microphone signal that is useable for subsequent sound processing operations.

The auditory prosthesis comprises a sound processor that is configured to convert received sound signals into output signals for use in generating stimulation for delivery to a recipient of the auditory prosthesis. The sound processor comprises an impulse-aware gain system that is configured to generate a time-variable gain for the application to the audio signal. The time-variable gain applied to the audio signal is dependent on both a level of the audio signal and the presence or absence of impulse sounds in the audio signal.

An example method includes dividing the incoming acoustic signal into one or more frequency envelopes. The example method also includes determining which auditory prosthesis electrodes to stimulate. The example method additionally includes determining a temporal reference point to which auditory prosthesis electrode stimuli are referenced. The example method further includes determining a delay for each of the auditory prosthesis electrode stimuli from the temporal reference point. An auditory device according to one embodiment includes a processing unit configurable to determine a noise estimate and a measure for one of a plurality of samples of an audio signal. The measure relates to an upper volume bounds. The processing unit is configured to apply at least one rule using the noise estimate and/or the measure to identify an input dynamic range for mapping the audio signal to a corresponding stimulation signal.

Systems and methods for altering the input dynamic range of an auditory device

A sub-cranial vibratory stimulator that at least partially bypasses a recipient's skull bone and delivers vibration to fluid within a recipient's skull bone. The sub-cranial vibratory stimulator comprises an actuator that is configured to be implanted beneath a recipient's skull bone. The actuator transfers vibration to the fluid within the recipient's skull without first passing through the skull bone. The actuator is also substantially mechanically decoupled (isolated) from the recipient's skull bone.
