A method, apparatus and article of manufacture is provided for mapping data objects residing in multiple data sources, or generated dynamically, into a single, reusable software component, for integrated information access to multiple disparate data sources, residing on or generating the data dynamically on different hardware systems and possibly in different data formats. The method has steps for identifying data objects in multiple data sources, employing an information integration software facility for connecting to the data sources containing the data objects, and registering the data objects with the software facility, creating a single virtual data object consolidating multiple attributes from the registered data objects, and establishing a connection to the software facility for referencing the virtual data object as though it was a single real data object. It also has a step for wrapping this virtual data object as a reusable software component accessible directly from applications.

Mapping persistent data in multiple data sources into a single object-oriented component

A method, apparatus, and article of manufacture for providing for persistence of Java&trade; objects. A Java&trade; object is instantiated from its corresponding Java&trade; class definition and then loaded into a Java&trade; virtual machine. The class definition corresponding to the Java&trade; object can be derived using either the Java&trade; Reflection API. Once the class definition is derived, it can be used to inspect the contents of the Java&trade; object. A structured type instance is then generated from the inspected contents of the Java&trade; object, wherein the structured type instance is stored in a column of a table of a relational database managed by a relational database management system. As a result of these steps, the Java&trade; object is persistently stored in the database, yet the persistence semantics for storing the object are not specified as part of the class definition of the object, which means that the persistence semantics are orthogonal to the class definition.

A new approach to indexing semi-structured, non-traditional data uses an external search engine accessible to a database engine through a standardized interface. An external index managed by an external search engine maps object identifiers associated with the non-traditional data to row identifiers for a table stored in the relational database. In response to a query, one or more of the object identifiers are retrieved from the external index by the external search engine. The object identifiers returned by the external search engine are then used by the database engine to retrieve one or more row identifiers from an index in the relational database. The row identifiers are then used to retrieve one or more rows from the table in the relational database.
