Disclosed is an aqueous adhesive composition which comprises an admixture of: (a) a first aqueous composition comprising, (i) one or more film forming polymers, (ii) one or more lower crystallinity polynitroso compounds, (iii) one or more higher crystallinity polynitroso compounds, and (iv) one or more bismaleimide-containing monomers; and (b) a second aqueous composition comprising (i) an aqueous dispersion of at least one phenolic resin which is a condensation product of a phenol and formaldehyde, wherein the aqueous dispersion is stabilized by at least one polyacrylate; (b) one or more latices formed from one or more halogenated polyolefins; and (c) one or more metal oxides.

An adhesive composition is comprised of a film forming polymer, (ii) a lower crystallinity polynitroso compound, (e.g., poly-(1,4-phenylyenazine-N,N-dioxide)), (iii) a higher crystallinity polynitroso compound (e.g., poly-(1,4-phenylyenazine-N,N-dioxide)), and (iv) a carrier liquid. The composition is useful in bonding metal and rubber to make, for example, components to damp noise, vibration or harshness.

The invention relates to a method for producing poly(1,4-phenylenazine-N,N-dioxide) and derivatives thereof which are substituted in the ring, by oxidizing p-benzoquinonedioxime or the corresponding derivative thereof which is substituted in the ring, using polyanions of the halogens bromine or iodine. Tribromide Br3- or triiodide I3- can be used as polyanions and these can be obtained in situ from H2O2 and a bromide or iodide.
