A remote radio unit, RRU, has an outer shell housing radio equipment and at least one fiber optical transceiver module. The fiber optical transceiver module comprises, a casing provided with an interface having a transmitter output, and a Transmitter Optical Sub-Assembly, TOSA, arranged within said casing, where said TOSA transmits light through said transmitter output. The fiber optical transceiver module is physically attached to a heat transferring structure adapted to transfer heat generated in said fiber optical transceiver module to a heat sink arranged outside said outer shell. The proposed technology also provides a fiber optical transceiver module comprising a casing provided with an interface having a transmitter output and a TOSA arranged within said casing and adapted to transmit light through said transmitter output, wherein said casing is further provided with thermal pads arranged on the surface of said casing, said thermal pads may connect to a thermal conductor.

Methods and apparatus are disclosed for performing a spectrum assignment and route selection algorithm in an optical WDM network. The optical WDM is assigned an optical band of frequencies. In accordance to the present invention, a new spectrum assignment in the optical band always adjoins a spectrum assignment previously allocated. The very first spectrum assignment may be made to start with one end frequency in the optical band. Given a spectrum demand, one or more spectrum assignments are identified and one or more feasible routes are determined. Among the one or more feasible routes, an optimal route may be selected based on a set of pre-defined criteria. The spectrum assignment and route selection algorithm disclosed herein reduces computational complexities and improves spectrum efficiencies.

Methods and apparatus for a network element or server end station to determine an estimated physical location of a fault in a communications link utilized by two network elements. In an embodiment, the first and second network elements generate link failure indications including time values representing when the respective network element detected the fault. In other embodiments, the link failure indications include time values transmitted over the communications link between the first and second network elements. A time distance between these time values is calculated, which is used to calculate the estimated physical location of the fault. In some embodiments, the link failure indications include sequence numbers transmitted or about to be transmitted over the communications link between the network elements. Sequence distances are calculated between the sequence numbers, and are used to calculate the estimated physical location of the fault.
