A detection system in an aircraft includes an optical fiber arranged along a structure of the aircraft and affixed to the structure with clamps that are spaced apart along the structure. The optical fiber includes two or more sets of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). The system also includes a light source to generate light with two or more wavelengths for injection into the optical fiber, and processing circuitry to identify an overheat condition and monitor vibration experienced by the optical fiber based on reflected signals generated by the two or more sets of FBGs. Integrity of the clamps is indicated by monitoring the vibration.

A fire and/or overheated condition detector for a lithium ion battery is provided. The fire and/or overheated condition detector includes a chamber defining a detection space fluidly communicative with an interior of the lithium ion battery, a temperature sensor operably disposed proximate to the detection space, gas detection assemblies configured to detect gases through absorption in the detection space and a smoke detection assembly configured to detect particle scattering in the detection space to discriminate smoke particles from nuisance particles.

A smoke and temperature detection system includes a plurality of fiber optic cables terminating in a plurality of nodes positioned to monitor a fire or smoke condition at one or more protected spaces, and a temperature detection fiber optic cable having a plurality of fiber Bragg gratings arrayed along the temperature detection fiber optic cable. A control system is operably connected to the plurality of fiber optic cables and to the temperature detection fiber optic cable. The control system includes a first light sensitive device configured to receive a scattered light signal from the plurality of fiber optic cables, and a second light sensitive device configured to receive a reflected light signal from the fiber Bragg gratings. The control system is configured to detect a temperature at the fiber Bragg gratings based on one or more properties of the reflected light signal received at the second light sensitive device.

Fiber optic temperature sensors in a distributed smoke detection system

A system is disclosed for protection of a lithium ion battery. The system includes a first light source and a first optical guide including first and second ends. The first optical guide is in optical communication with the light source at the first end of the first optical guide. A first material is disposed on an exterior surface of the first optical guide in fluid communication with an exterior surface of the lithium ion battery. The first material is optically responsive to a first gas indicative of an overheat condition or combustion of the lithium ion battery. A first light detector is in optical communication with the second end of the first optical guide.

A method of monitoring smoke, fire, and temperature conditions includes transmitting light through a first fiber optic cable, the fiber optic cable terminating at a node disposed to monitor a smoke or fire condition at one or more predetermined areas, transmitting light along a second fiber optic cable, the second fiber optic cable arranged to monitor a temperature condition at one or more predetermined areas, receiving scattered light from the first fiber optic cable and/or the second fiber optic cable at a control system, and analyzing the scattered light to determine at least one of the presence and magnitude of smoke, fire and/or a temperature condition along the fiber harness or at the node.

Disclosed is a sensor for detecting temperature of an aircraft. The sensor comprises a temperature sensor elongated with respect to an axis. The temperature sensor comprises a sheath elongated with respect to the axis. The temperature sensor comprises a central conductor disposed within the sheath and elongated with respect to the axis having a conductor material defining a conductor temperature coefficient having a conductor coefficient magnitude. The temperature sensor comprises an optical fiber disposed within the sheath. The temperature sensor comprises a thermistor disposed within the sheath and surrounding the central conductor, the thermistor having thermistor material defining a thermistor temperature coefficient defining a thermistor coefficient magnitude greater than the conductor coefficient magnitude.

Aircraft temperature sensor

A detection system for measuring the presence of one or more conditions in a predetermined area includes a fiber harness having at least one fiber optic cable for transmitting light. The at least one fiber optic cable defines a node arranged to measure the one or more conditions. The node is arranged such that light scattered by an atmosphere adjacent the node is received by at least one core of the fiber optic cable. A control system operably connected to the fiber harness includes a light source for transmitting light to the node and a light sensitive device configured to receive scattered light associated with the node. The control system analyzes more than one signal corresponding to more than one wavelength of the scattered light associated with the node to determine at least one of a presence and magnitude of the one or more conditions at the node.

High sensitivity fiber optic based detection

A system for monitoring smoke and/or temperature of an electronic device includes a fiber harness having at least one fiber optic cable terminating at a node. The node is located to measure one or more conditions at the electronic device, and a control system operably connected to the fiber harness. The control system includes a light source configured to transmit light through the fiber harness, a light sensitive device configured to receive scattered light associated with the node, and a control unit configured to analyze the scattered light to determine at least one of a presence and magnitude of the one or more conditions at the node of one or more conditions at the electronic device, wherein the control unit is further configured to transmit a signal in response to the one or more conditions, wherein the one or more conditions are one or more of smoke, fire, and temperature.

Fiber optic based monitoring of temperature and/or smoke conditions at electronic components

Overheat and fire detection for aircraft systems includes at least one temperature sensing fiber optic cable. The at least one fiber optic cable is comprised of a plurality of modular fiber optic cables. The plurality of modular fiber optic cables includes at least one sensing and one non-sensing section. Portions of the at least one temperature sensing fiber optic cable can be removed and replace with separate modular fiber optic cables.

Overheat and fire detection for aircraft systems includes an optical controller and a fiber optic loop extending from the optical controller. The fiber optic loop extends through one or more zones of the aircraft. An optical signal is transmitted through the fiber optic loop from the optical controller and is also received back at the optical controller. The optical controller analyzes the optical signal to determine the temperature, strain, or both experienced within the zones.
