A method of preparing a staple cartridge includes forming first staples with a first alloy, and forming second staples with a second alloy that is different than the first alloy. The method includes positioning the first staples into staple cavities of a first row of staple cavities of the staple cartridge, the first row of staple cavities being a first distance from an elongate slot of the staple cartridge, and positioning the second staples into staple cavities of a second row of staple cavities, the second row of staple cavities being a second distance from the elongate slot of the staple cartridge. The second distance is greater than the first distance. The first staples are configured to degrade at a first rate in a tissue environment, and the second staples are configured to degrade at a second rate that is different than the first rate.

Method for implementing a staple system

A degradation controlled metal implant and methods of controlling the degradation of the implant. In one embodiment, the implant includes a body, one or more apertures, and one or more fastener blanks fixed within one or more apertures. In another embodiment, the implant includes a body of a first material and a second material plated in various patterns over the first material.

Controlling the degradation of bioresorbable metal implants

An alloy and an implant having a three-dimensional structure based on such alloy. The alloy comprises a MgZnCa alloy containing nanosized precipitates being less noble than the Mg matrix alloy and having a Zn content ranging 0.1 wt. % Zn to 2 wt. % Zn and a calcium content ranging from 0.2 wt. % to 0.5 wt. %, and having one or more other elements, with the remainder being Mg. Any second phase generated during the solidification process may be completely dissolved by a solution heat treatment. Finely dispersed nanosized precipitates can then be generated by a subsequent aging heat treatment step. These precipitates are used to 'pin' the grain boundaries and to prevent the coarsening of the grain structure during further processing to achieve grain sizes below 5 &#x3bc;m.

Magnesium alloy with adjustable degradation rate

An alloy and an implant having a three-dimensional structure based on such alloy. The alloy comprises a monophasic MgZn alloy containing from 2.0 wt. % Zn to 6 wt. % Zn, having less than 0.001 wt. % of one or more other elements with the remainder being Mg. In some embodiments, the alloy is substantially free of microgalvanic elements. In some embodiments, the alloy includes a MgZnCa alloy containing nanosized precipitates being less noble than the Mg matrix alloy and having a Zn content ranging from 3.0 wt. % Zn to 6 wt. % Zn and a calcium content ranging from 0.0005 wt. % to 1.0 wt. %, having less than 0.001 wt. % of one or more other elements with the remainder being Mg. In other embodiments, the alloy includes a MgZnCa alloy containing nanosized precipitates being less noble than the Mg matrix alloy, a plurality of nanosized precipitates being more noble than the Mg matrix and having a Zn content ranging from 3.0 wt. % Zn to 6 wt. % Zn, a calcium content ranging from 0.0005 wt. % to 1.0 wt. %, having less than 0.001 wt. % of one or more other elements with the remainder being Mg.

Ultrapure magnesium alloy with adjustable degradation rate

The present disclosure describes a coated implant for bone repair that is biodegradable. The coated implant includes an implant body formed from a magnesium alloy, and a porous ceramic coating disposed on at least a portion of an outer surface of the implant body. The porous ceramic coating can include MgO, Mg(OH), Mg(PO), and oxides of alloying elements of magnesium.

Lean electrolyte for biocompatible plasmaelectrolytic coatings on magnesium implant material

A medical implant comprises a biodegradable magnesium-based alloy of which at least a part of its surface layer comprises a magnesium carbonate. A method for the manufacture of a biocompatible, corrosion-inhibiting protective surface layer on a medical implant comprising a magnesium-based alloy, comprises: providing an implant comprising a magnesium-based alloy to be coated; placing the implant into a reactor chamber; exposing at least part of the surface of said implant to an atmosphere comprising humid carbon dioxide to produce a coating on the surface of the implant comprising a magnesium carbonate of the formula x MgCO.y Mg(OH), whereby x+y=1; removing the implant from the reactor chamber; and drying the surface of the implant.

Medical implant comprising a biodegradable magnesium-based alloy and method for its manufacture

The present disclosure is directed, at least in part, to a method of producing ceramic layers on magnesium and its alloys, a magnesium implant with a ceramic layer made by the method, and a magnesium implant having a biocompatible ceramic layer substantially free of material which impairs the biocompatibility of said biocompatible ceramic layer. In an exemplary embodiment, the method of producing ceramic layers on magnesium and its alloys, includes (a) immersing an implant and a metal sheet into the aqueous electrolyte bath, said aqueous electrolyte bath including: ammoniac, diammonium hydrogen phosphate and urea, and wherein the implant is made of magnesium or its alloy; (b) performing a anodic oxidation by passing a current between the implant, the metal sheet and through the aqueous electrolyte bath, wherein the implant is connected to a positive pole of a current source and the metal sheet is connected to a negative pole of the current source; (c) applying a current density selected to form sparks on said implant, to thereby form a ceramic layer on said implant.
