A method and device for applying pesticides to growing plants or portions of plants is described in which an area to be protected is enclosed and a small amount of pesticide contained in a packet is placed within the enclosure. The packet protects the pesticide from loss or destruction by water and permits pesticide vapors to escape at a rate sufficient to make the enclosed area untenable to certain pests for an extended period of time. The packet is preferably made from low density polyethylene, an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer or a combination of the two, and the pesticide is preferably a diethyl phosphorothioate insecticide. In the preferred embodiment of the device, the device also acts as an insulator and includes liquid receiving pockets to act as 'heat sinks' to protect the trunk from below freezing temperatures.

An insulating device or insulator for trunks of trees or plants is described that provides protection and thermal insulation against damaging cold during their tender years. This device is adjusted for fit about the trunk by the trunk itself as it increases in girth, thus providing effectiveness for several years without attention. The insulating device is weather resistant, protecting the young trunk from both wind damage and the effects of water from rain or irrigation. The device also protects the trunk against bark chewing rodents and prevents sprouting along the lower trunk. A preferred embodiment of the device includes liquid receiving pockets that act as 'heat sinks' to protect the trunk from below freezing temperatures.

A process is described for the recovery of uranium values from phosphoric acid utilizing an alkyl pyrophosphoric acid (APPA) primary extractant. After extracting the uranium from the phosphoric acid, the APPA extractant is deactivated by heating and the uranium values stripped into a phosphoric acid strip solution containing ferric ion as a salting agent. The uranium values may then be re-extracted directly from this stripping solution without adjustment of its concentration into a dialkyl phosphoric acid trialkyl phosphine oxide synergistic extractant from which a relatively pure yellow cake is precipitated. A new procedure for preparing the requisite APPA primary extractants is also disclosed.

The solid organic materials contained in wet-process phosphoric acid are removed by froth flotation in a flotation cell in which the solid organic materials overflow with the foam from the top of the cell and the acid, after passing through the cell, is passed to extraction. The froth flotation process can also be used to remove defoamer and organic soluble materials from the wet-process phosphoric acid. Uranium in the partially purified phosphoric acid product is extracted with a suitable organic extractant, typically a mixture of mono- and di-(alkylphenyl) esters of orthophosphoric acid.

A container and vehicle therefor for transporting radioactive materials is provided. The container utilizes a removable system of heat conducting fins made of a light weight highly heat conductive metal, such as aluminum or aluminum alloys. This permits a substantial reduction in the weight of the container during transport, increases the heat dissipation capability of the container and substantially reduces the scrubbing operation after loading and before unloading the radioactive material from the container. The vehicle utilizes only a pair of horizontal side beams interconnecting a pair of yoke members to support the container and provide the necessary strength and safety with a minimum of weight.

Wet-process phosphoric acid which is obtained by the acidulation of uncalcined phosphate rock with sulphuric acid and which typically contains 28-31% P.sub.2 O.sub.5 and measurable amounts of solid organic materials, such as, for example 0.1% or more, is treated to remove the solid organic materials contained therein by intimately contacting the acid with a liquid hydrocarbon so that the aqueous is the continuous phase, resulting in the solid organic materials being taken up by the organic phase.
