A test set for evaluating network performance is described, and which may include an output device, a processor, a power supply, a memory unit, and a control terminal. The test set may be configured to receive a user-entered selection of one of a plurality of different bit-error rate profiles and generate a test signal exhibiting the selected bit-error rate profile. The test set may also supply the test signal exhibiting the selected bit-error rate profile to a network under test. In addition, the test set may receive as an input, an output from the network under test. The output may include the test signal exhibiting the selected bit-error rate. The test set may evaluate the received test signal and determine the performance of the network in response to the received test signal exhibiting the bit-error rate. The test set may then output the results of the evaluation.

Method and apparatus for monitoring bit-error rate

A standard test device is used to test the interoperability of a Synchronized Optical Network (SONET) optical interface, e.g., a 1+1 protected SONET interface. In one embodiment, two test sets, under the common control of a master controller, can be connected respectively to the working and protect lines of an optical interface. The controller then operates the test sets to test the operation of the interface under the Automatic Protection Switching (APS) protocol to verify interoperability based on the standards incorporated in the test sets while requiring minimal operator intervention. Alternatively, a single test set can include two connections that are connected, respectively, to the working and protection lines of the interface being tested. The test set can then test the operation of the interface under the APS protocol to verify interoperability based on the standards incorporated in the test set.

Method and systems for testing automatic protection switching protocol in optical interfaces for synchronous optical networks

A method and apparatus for measurement of service disruption interval is described. The apparatus may include may included a setting component, a generating component, a first output component, a receiving component, a service disruption start time designator, a settling start time designator, a settling period designator, a service disruption end time designator, a service disruption interval designator, a second output component, and a memory component. In general, a test set consistent with the described embodiments may continuously send test traffic through a network under test ('NUT') and monitor the traffic output from the NUT. The test set may be configured to detect the start of a service disruption and to detect when the service disruption has been cleared. Based on these two pieces of information, the test set may determine and report a service disruption interval.
