An optical shutter apparatus for controllably blocking an aperture, the shutter apparatus having a rotary actuator configured to rotate a shaft about an axis from a closed-shutter angular position toward an open-shutter angular position and a shutter blade coupled to the shaft and extending along a plane that is in parallel with the axis of rotation, wherein a surface of the shutter blade is reflective. There is a ferromagnetic collar coupled to the shaft and having a protruding portion extending orthogonally from the shaft with respect to the axis. A stationary magnet is disposed to attract the protruding portion of the collar and urge the shaft toward the closed-shutter angular position.

Shutter for laser modulation

An optical shutter apparatus has a baseplate that defines an aperture in a plane and that has at least first and second tabs that extend outward from the plane. At least a first linear actuator is coupled to the first tab and drives a magnetic shaft between the first and second tabs according to an electrical signal. A shutter blade is coupled to the magnetic shaft and is linearly translatable along a translation path in the direction of the plane between a first and a second position, wherein the shutter blade blocks at least a first portion of the aperture in the first position and unblocks the first portion of the aperture in the second position.

The instant invention teaches a monostable shutter with magnetic blade return using a bistable actuator with blade motion constrained to provide drive force in a single direction and permits the use of compact bistable coil for continuous use by a circuit that applies a high voltage at the beginning of drive that decays to a lower voltage to prevent coil burn out.

An optical shutter apparatus has at least one shutter blade that is movable between a first position blocking at least a portion of an aperture and a second position spaced apart from the first position. A linkage member is coupled to the at least one shutter blade and has a magnetic material. An actuator is coupled to the linkage member and is energizable to translate the at least one shutter blade between the first and second positions. An intermediate plate has a friction surface of a non-magnetic material. A magnet positioned away from the friction surface of the intermediate plate is disposed to urge the linkage member against the friction surface of the intermediate plate.

An optical shutter apparatus has a shutter blade pivotable between first and second positions. The shutter blade in the first position blocks at least a portion of a light path. A stepper motor pivots the shutter blade to first or second positions. A magnetic shutter blade retention apparatus has a first movable member with a first surface, coupled to the shutter blade. A first stationary member is spaced apart from the shutter blade and is magnetically attracted to the first stationary member when the stepper motor is de-energized. When the shutter blade is pivoted to the first position, a point on the first surface is spaced apart from the first stationary member by a first distance; when the shutter blade is pivoted to the second position, the point on the first surface is spaced apart from the first stationary member by a second distance that is less than the first.

An optical shutter apparatus has a shutter blade that is movable between a first position, blocking at least a portion of an aperture and a second position spaced apart from the first position. A rotary actuator has a stator and a magnetic rotor element that is coupled to the shutter blade. The rotary actuator is energizable for moving the shutter blade between the first and second positions, wherein the rotor element rotates about an axis that lies within the stator. At least one permanent magnet is coupled to the stator and provides a magnetic field that biases the stator to provide a continuous urging force on the magnetic rotor element.

The invention relates to a patternable coatable electrically conductive layer comprising a fluid-coated electrically conductive material, wherein the fluid-coated electrically conductive material has sufficient conductivity to induce an electric field strong enough to change the optical state of a light modulating material and a display comprising a substrate, at least one patternable coatable electrically conductive layer comprising a fluid-coated electrically conductive material, wherein said fluid coated electrically conductive material has sufficient conductivity to induce an electric field strong enough to change the optical state of a light modulating material which has a first and a second field-switched stable optical state, and an imaging layer comprising said light modulating material disposed over said at least one patternable fluid-coated electrically conductive layer. The invention also relates to a method for making a coatable electrically conductive layer and a method for making a display with a coatable electrically conductive layer.

A bistable display having one or more permanent hideable mark, and a method of forming the permanent hideable mark, are described. The permanent hideable mark can be hidden and revealed numerous times without loss of information.

A transaction card system includes a transaction card with a display tag for displaying short term information, the character display having optical states that are stable without power and viewable from one side of the display tag and an array of electrical contacts for electrically addressing the character display from the other side of the tag, a contact window through which the contacts are accessible, machine readable data on the card, and a long term information printed on the transaction card; a transaction card writer having a reader for reading the machine readable data and having means for updating the short term information displayed on the transaction card; and a central computer connected to the transaction card writer having a data base and a central processor for receiving the information read by the magnetic card reader and generating display commands for the transaction card writer.

A printhead and method of forming the printhead are provided. The method includes forming an ink feed passage through a print head substrate by providing a metallic substrate having a first surface and a second surface; providing an ink ejector structure on a first surface of the metallic substrate; providing a mask over the second surface of the metallic substrate to define the ink feed passage; and forming the ink feed passage from the second surface of the metallic substrate using a liquid etchant.
