A magnetic tool holder includes a body having a bottom and side walls defining an elongate central channel, wherein the bottom defines a first plane and ends of the side walls define a second plane, wherein the body further includes side edges laterally extending from said side walls in the second plane, and outer side walls extending from the side edges back to the first plane; and at least one magnet in the elongate central channel, the at least one magnet having a tool securing surface positioned substantially coplanar with the second plane. The outer side walls configured in this manner greatly increase the magnetic flux in both planes or surfaces of the holder.

Apparatuses for coupling magnetic forces into motive force are disclosed having a spinner arm, a power bed, and a hub. The spinner arm has a helical array of magnets mounted about a shaft. The apparatus also has a rotational timing coupling such as a stationary rack and spinner shaft pinion. The power bed has two arrays of magnets defining a power track. The spinner arm shaft may be mounted in the hub, allowing rotation of the spinner arm about its axis. The hub is further constructed to allow the hub and spinner arm to move translationally within a plane parallel to a plane containing the power bed. High coercive force magnets in the spinner and power bed interact to displace the spinner arm and rotate it about its axis. Multiple spinner arms and power beds may be arranged to move a load linearly or drive a load about an axis.

A magnetic head for a magnetic pick-up tool includes a magnet having a pick-up surface and a sleeve member having an open end and being slidably positioned over the magnet, the sleeve member being made of a material acted upon by the magnet such that the magnet exerts a force upon the sleeve for maintaining the sleeve in a rest position wherein the open end extends beyond the pick-up surface, wherein the sleeve is slidable in a direction away from the pick-up surface and against the force to a withdrawn with respect to the magnet. A magnet head for a magnetic pick-up tool includes a magnet having a pick-up surface and a sleeve member having an open end and being slidably positioned over the magnet with the pick-up surface exposed through the open end, the sleeve member being made of a material acted upon by the magnet such that the magnet exerts a force upon the sleeve for maintaining the sleeve in a rest position wherein the open end extends beyond the pick-up surface, wherein the sleeve is slidable in a direction away from the pick-up surface and against the force to a withdrawn with respect to the magnet.
