A process for the deposition of a film of an electrophoretic resin upon the surface of a substrate which comprises the steps of (i) electrophoretically depositing from a bath comprising water, a water miscible organic solvent and the resin, a film of the uncured resin upon the surface of the substrate; (ii) immersing said film in a solution of a resin additive in a solvent medium comprising water and a water miscible organic solvent, the amount of said resin additive dissolved in said solvent medium being sufficient for the absorption into the resin film of sufficient additive to impart the desired property to the cured resin film, the composition of said solvent medium being such that the requisite amount of additive can be dissolved therein and such that said desired property is imparted to said resin film while immersed in said solvent medium without significant damage to the resin fim; and (iii) curing the resin.

After a metal finishing treatment by means of an aqueous solution that forms a surface of free metal, or comprising metal ions, exposed to the environment, the surface is rinsed, contacted with a soap solution and subjected to a final rinse. The treatment provides enhanced corrosion resistance and rapid spontaneous de-watering after the final rinse.

De-watering of metal surfaces

Aqueous solutions such as chromium plating solutions are tested by contacting the solution with a water permeable medium such as a folded filter paper, causing the solution to diffuse upwardly through the medium and contacting separate portions of the diffusing solution in the medium with a water soluble ferrocyanide salt and with a water soluble iron salt respectively. The test may be performed when a filter paper, whose ends have been impregnated respectively with potassium ferrocyanide and a ferrous salt.

Testing of aqueous solutions

It is known to attempt to plate chromium from a solution containing trivalent chromium salts and organic complexants. The invention provides an aqueous chromium electroplating system containing trivalent chromium together with both a formate or acetate and a bromide. Optionally the solution also contains ammonium, borate, chloride, sulphate and alkali metal ions and a wetting agent. The invention has the advantage of providing a solution with commercially acceptable covering and throwing power whose effluent can easily be purified to acceptable standards.

Compositions for use in chromium plating

Trivalent chromium electroplating baths which have developed characteristic faults due to accumulation of trace metal contaminants are treated with just sufficient of a water soluble ferrocyanide to restore the bath to normal working order.

Method of regenerating a chromium electroplating bath

It is known to attempt to plate chromium from a solution containing trivalent chromium salts and organic complexants. The invention provides an aqueous chromium electroplating system containing trivalent chromium, together with both a formate or acetate and a bromide. Optionally the solution also contains ammonium, borate, chloride, sulphate and alkali metal ions and a wetting agent. The invention has the advantage of providing a solution with commercially acceptable covering and throwing power whose effluent can easily be purified to acceptable standards.
