An integrated ink rail assembly includes at least one page pack mounted directly to a manifold, an ink rail mounted to the manifold, and an orifice rail mounted to the ink rail. An ink source is connected to the page pack. The page pack, manifold, ink rail, and orifice rail define a plurality of ink passages to deliver ink from the ink source to a drum. The ink passage may be directed towards the middle of the assembly such that a web smaller than the page pack can be printed.

In order to permit automated setting of operating parameters while also facilitating the removal of paper jams, a device for adjusting the gap size between folding rollers of a rotary press folding machine includes a pair of counter-rotating folding rollers which define a folding nip or gap therebetween. Each folding roller is mounted to one end of a pivoting support arm, and a link arm is slidably and pivotably mounted to the other end. An extensible member connects the link arms to each other, which enables the distance between the rollers to be quickly and easily adjusted. An inflatable bag is disposed between the support arms which forces the rollers towards each other to resist spreading of the rollers when a paper passes through the gap between the rollers. The bag can be quickly deflated from a remote location to allow removal of jammed papers, and can be quickly re-inflated to the desired setting to minimize down time. A control system controlling both the extensible member and the inflatable bag permits rapid adjustment of the folding machine to accommodate changes in paper thickness.

An improved throw off device for disengaging adjacent blanket cylinders (12) and (14) from each other and corresponding adjacent plate cylinders (16) and (18) is provided. The device includes pairs of bearing assemblies (28A), (28B), (30A) and (30B) that are mounted on the opposite ends of the journal (26) of each of the blanket cylinders (12) and (14). Each bearing assembly is defined by an inner race (36) and an outer race (38) having an eccentric bore in which the inner race is disposed. The device eliminates the need for a bearing sleeve. Each bearing assembly has a lever (74) arm that is mounted to the outer race (38). The lever arm (74) is defined by two wing-shaped portions (76) and (78). Each bearing assembly further includes a hydraulic cylinder (86). Each hydraulic cylinder (86) is coupled at one end to one of the two wing-shaped portions of the lever arm (74) and at the other end to one of the side frames of the printing press. A stopping member (84) is mounted to the other wing-shaped portion of the lever arm (74). Each bearing assembly also has an corresponding adjustable stopping screw (88) that is mounted to the side frame adjacent to the stopping member (84). A plumbing circuit (100) is also provided for uniformly supplying each of the hydraulic cylinders with equal volumes of hydraulic fluid so that they engage and disengage the blanket cylinders (12) and (14) in tandem.

A marker applying device (50) for a substrate (14) having a plurality of markers (70) having magnetic material (74) in a backing (72) of the markers (70), and an adhesive (76) on a front surface (78) of the backing (72), a marker retainer (62) having a relative weak magnetic force at spaced locations (64) for releasably retaining the markers (70) at the spaced locations (64) in a configuration with the adhesive (76) facing outwardly from the retainer (62), an electromagnet (88) positioned with the substrate (14) being intermediate the electromagnet (88) and retainer (62), and the markers (70) being sequentially positioned by the retainer (62) in a configuration with the adhesive (76) facing the electromagnet (88) and substrate (14), and a device (CPU) for electrically pulsing the electromagnet (88) to produce a relatively strong magnetic force, such that the electromagnet (88) removes the markers (70) from the retainer (62) and deposits them onto the substrate (14) such that the adhesive (76) on the markers (70) retains the markers (70) on the substrate (14).

A self-oscillating roller assembly (11, 13) and method of oscillating a roller in an offset printing press having an oscillating drive assembly (11) for oscillating a rotationally mounted roller (10, 12) with a source of pneumatic pressure (62) by alternatively applying pressure to pressure chambers (42A, 42B) on opposite sides of the roller (10, 12) to impart a longitudinal force on the oscillating roller (10, 12) from the source of pressure (62) in two opposite directions and a controller (47) for controlling the application of pressure (58, 62) to alternately move the rotationally mounted roller in two opposite directions.

A printing press sidelay and circumferential register mechanism having cooperating elongated operator elements which are rotatably driven by remotely controlled motors to laterally and circumferentially adjust the position of the plate cylinder through thrust bearings that support the ends of the operator elements adjacent the end of the plate cylinder.
