An interbody system including an implant and a tool for inserting and expanding the medical implant and locking the implant in place is disclosed. The medical implant may include an expandable body defined by a superior endplate and an inferior endplate that are hingedly coupled and may be expanded and lordosed. The superior and inferior endplate may include gripping protrusions that mate and/or directly engage with recessed jaws of disclosed surgical tool. The surgical tool may include a vertically movable jaw to expand and contract the implant when engaged with the gripping protrusions of the implant. The surgical tool may also include a drive portion that engages the drive feature of the lock screw with the drive end of the surgical tool lock the implant while in an expanded position.

Parallel jaw inserter

An expandable implant may include an expandable body defined by a superior endplate and an inferior endplate that are hingedly coupled and may be expanded and lordosed. The superior endplate may include a first core having a distal engagement surface and the inferior endplate may include a second core having a proximal engagement surface and a threaded screw aperture. The implant may include a threaded breakoff screw disposed in the threaded screw aperture and movable between a locked position and an unlocked position, for example. In the locked position, the threaded locking screw may urge the distal engagement surface of the first core into direct contact with the proximal engagement surface of the second core. When broken, the breakoff screw may comprise a recessed fracture surface.

Expandable interbody implant and breakoff screw

An interbody system including an implant and a tool for inserting and expanding the medical implant and locking the implant in place is disclosed. The medical implant may include an expandable body defined by a superior endplate and an inferior endplate that are hingedly coupled and may be expanded and lordosed. The superior and inferior endplate may include radially disposed and opposed surfaces that mate and/or directly contact each other when a locking screw is threaded through a screw aperture. The implant may include a threaded breakoff screw disposed in the threaded screw aperture and movable between a locked position and an unlocked position, for example. In the locked position, the threaded locking screw may urge the distal engagement surface of the first core into direct contact with the proximal engagement surface of the second core. When broken, the breakoff screw may comprise a recessed fracture surface.

Expandable interbody implant and corresponding surgical tool

An orthopedic trialing instrument may include a shaft extending from a first end to a second end, a handle coupled to the shaft, and a first interbody trial disposed on the first end. In various embodiments, the first interbody trial may include a first bone screw indicator configured to visually represent a corresponding bone screw trajectory. In some embodiments, a double-sided orthopedic trialing instrument may include a first interbody trial on a first end and a second interbody trial on a second end. In various embodiments, each of the first interbody trial and second interbody trial may have at least one bone screw protrusion configured to visually represent a corresponding bone screw trajectory. In some embodiments, a plurality of orthopedic trialing instruments having differently sized interbody trials may be provided as a kit.

An expandable implant may include an expandable body defined by a superior endplate and an inferior endplate that are hingedly coupled and may be expanded and lordosed by an external surgical tool. The superior endplate may include a first core having a distal engagement surface and the inferior endplate may a second core having a proximal engagement surface and a threaded screw aperture. The implant may include a threaded locking screw disposed in the threaded screw aperture and movable between a locked position and an unlocked position, for example. In the locked position, the threaded locking screw may urge the distal engagement surface of the first core into direct contact with the proximal engagement surface of the second core. The implant may include a pair of mounting tangs that may be sheared off and/or recesses. The locking screw may be a break-off screw.

Expandable interbody implant and corresponding inserter

A system for reducing deformities of the vertebrae in the spine includes a first reduction assembly, a second reduction assembly, and a reduction drive assembly. The first reduction assembly is configured for attachment to a first reduction tower that attaches to a first vertebra. The second reduction assembly is configured for attachment to a second reduction tower that attaches to a second vertebra. The reduction drive assembly includes an arcuate rack gear operably coupling the first reduction assembly to the second reduction assembly to translate the first reduction assembly relative to the second reduction assembly along an arcuate path in a first plane.

Methods, systems, devices and tools for placing bone stabilization components in a patient are provided. The systems and devices have a reduced number of discrete components that allow placement through small incisions and tubes. More particularly, the present invention is directed to screws for use in systems and methods of treating the spine, which eliminate pain and enable spinal motion, which effectively mimics that of a normally functioning spine. Methods are also provided for installation of the screw and other subject systems.

Methods for stabilization of bone structures

A spinal alignment system for interconnecting vertebral bodies is disclosed. The system includes a bone screw polyaxially connected to a seat. The seat includes a top opening, a first rod receiving portion and a second rod receiving portion, a first rod channel and a second rod channel. The system is implanted into a first vertebral body. A first rod is introduced to the seat through the top opening in a first orientation and connected to the first rod receiving portion. A second rod is introduced to the seat through the top opening in a first orientation and connected to the second rod receiving portion. The first and second rods are each moved into a second orientation such that the rods project through the first and second rod channels, respectively. The rods are capable of polyaxial movement with respect to the seat for landing the opposite ends of the rods in adjacent seats of screw systems implanted in other vertebral bodies. A closure mechanism that is configured to lock the polyaxial motion of the rods with respect to the seat and to lock the polyaxial motion of the bone screw with respect to the seat simultaneously or independently is provided. The seat is connectable to a cannula for delivering the first and second rods into the first seat in a percutaneous, minimally invasive procedure.

Systems and methods for stabilization of bone structures

The retractor system for use in spinal surgery and other types of surgical procedures that is a simple and efficient solution for minimally invasive access to thoracolumbar spine is disclosed. The fully customizable design allows the surgeon to independently angle the retractor blades and expand the retractor in both cephalad-caudal and medial-lateral directions. With an offering of a range of blade lengths, access can be tailored to the patient's anatomy. Auxiliary instruments such as the retractor inserter, universal hex driver and blade removal instrument allow quick and controlled access to the surgical site. The retractor system provides versatility and control ensuring minimal tissue trauma.

Retractor

An inserter for implanting an intervertebral spacer into a spinal disc space is disclosed. The inserter comprises a jaw assembly connected to a shaft assembly that is connected to a handle assembly. The user operates the handle assembly to open and close the jaw assembly to thereby connect to and release from the intervertebral spacer. Furthermore, the handle assembly is operable to lock and unlock rotation of the jaw assembly while still connected thereto to permit angulation of the jaw assembly relative to the shaft assembly without losing hold of the intervertebral spacer.

Inserter for a spinal implant

A rod reduction instrument for position a rod relative to a seat of a bone anchor in a spinal implant system is provided. The instrument includes three concentric cannulas with circumferentially aligned rod receiving portions formed therein. One cannula is movable with respect to another to lock and unlock the seat of a bone anchor to the rod reduction instrument. The rod to be reduced is positioned inside at least one of the rod receiving portion. One cannula is moved with respect to another to lock the seat of the bone anchor to the rod reduction instrument. Once locked to the bone anchor, the remaining cannula is moved to reduce the distance between the rod and the seat within at least one of the rod receiving portions. The distance between the rod and the seat is reduced until the rod is position inside the seat. A secondary instrument is inserted through a central bore of the rod reduction instrument to introduce a cap and lock the cap to the seat securing the rod to the bone anchor.

Rod reducer

Systems and devices for dynamically stabilizing the spine are provided. The systems include a superior component for attachment to a superior vertebra of a spinal motion segment and an inferior component for attachment to an inferior vertebral of a spinal motion segment. The interconnection between the two components enables the spinal motion segment to move in a manner that mimics the natural motion of the spinal motion segment while substantially offloading the facet joints of the spine. Methods are also provided for stabilizing the spine and for implanting the subject systems.
