Methods, apparatus and systems that relate to high performance UV disinfection in a HVAC system with integrated concentrator optics are described. One example device for air disinfection includes a housing structured to include an interior volume and having an air inlet at a first end of the housing and an air outlet at a second end of the housing, the housing providing an air passage through the interior volume between the air inlet and the air outlet. The device filter includes at least one light source positioned proximate to the interior volume and at least one nonimaging optics element positioned proximate to the interior volume.

High performance ultraviolet disinfection in a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system with integrated concentrator optics

Methods, systems and devices are described that enable simultaneous measurement of the direction and polarization of electromagnetic waves. One example device includes a first, a second and a third detector, each configured to receive and measure an irradiance of an incoming electromagnetic radiation, and each are positioned such that their normal vectors point in a first, a second and a third direction that are different from one another. At least one of the detectors is further configured to obtain polarization information associated with the incoming electromagnetic radiation. The measured irradiances from the first, the second and the third detectors and the obtained polarization information enable identification of the direction of propagation and polarization state of the incoming electromagnetic radiation.

Apparatus and method to measure direction and polarization of electromagnetic waves

Methods, systems and devices are disclosed to detect and compensate wavefront errors associated with light that spans a large range of wavelengths and different polarization states. One example system includes an optical wavefront sensor that is positioned to receive input light after propagation through a turbulent medium, such as air or water or other liquids, and to detect a wavefront error associated with at least one spectral component of the received light that has a plurality of spectral components. The system further includes a wavefront compensator that is positioned to receive the input light and to simultaneously effectuate wavefront corrections for the plurality of spectral components of the input light based on the detected wavefront error.

Patterned polarizers with reduced transition regions are formed using a directional etch. Multiple layers can be combined to produce filters for polarization cameras and displays as well as achromatic filters.

Fabrication, design and application of high resolution patterned polarization filter

Devices and associated methods for measuring orientation using an optical gyroscope are disclosed. One example optical gyroscope includes a spherical component configured to allow propagation of light in one or more confined modes inside the spherical component. The spherical component includes a gain medium for enhancing a sustained confinement of light within the spherical component. The optical gyroscope also includes one or more detectors positioned outside of the spherical component to detect at least one characteristic of the light, or a change thereto, in response to a rotation of the optical gyroscope.

Methods and systems are described that enable three-dimensional (3D) imaging of objects. One example system includes a light source that produces multiple light beams having specific spectral content and polarization states. The system also includes phase masks that modify the intensity or phase of the light, and projection optics that allow simultaneously projection of at least three fringe patterns onto an object having particular phase, polarization and spectral characteristics. The detection system includes a camera that simultaneously receives light associated with the at the fringe patterns upon reflection from the object, and a processing unit coupled to the camera unit that determines one or both of a phase or a depth information associated with the object. The system and associated methods can efficiency produce 2D images of the object and allow determination of characteristics such as surface profile. The disclosed systems and methods can be effectively implemented with moving objects.

Digital fringe projection and multi-spectral polarization imaging for rapid 3D reconstruction

Methods, devices and systems provide improved detection, sensing and identification of objects using modulated polarized beams. An example polarization sensitive device includes an illumination source, and a modulator coupled to the illumination source to produce output beams in which polarization states or polarization parameters of the output beams are modulated to produce a plurality of modulated polarized beams. The device further includes a polarization sensitive detector positioned to receive a reflected portion of modulated polarized beams after reflection from an object and to produce information that is indicative of modulation and polarization states of the received beams. The information can be used to enable a determination of a distance between the polarization sensitive device and the object, or a determination of a polarization-specific characteristic of the object.

Polarization sensitive devices, methods and applications

Methods and devices for measuring full or partial Mueller matrix information in a single shot are described. One single shot polarimeter includes a polarization filter that is positioned to receive collimated light from a light source and to produce light having different polarization states. The polarization filter includes at least four sections, where each section receives a portion of the collimated light and produces light of a particular polarization state, which is spatially separated from light produced by other sections of the polarization filter. An imaging component images the sections of the polarization filter onto a plane of a sample object. One or more optical elements receive the light from the sample object and image a section of the sample object onto a detector. The disclosed devices and methods enable the measurement of the Mueller matrix of the sample with high signal-to-noise ratios.

A photovoltaic ('PV') module may comprise an array of freeform micro-optics and an array of PV cells. The PV module may be a flat panel with a nominal thickness smaller than the length and width of the flat panel. An array of lenses may be embedded in an array substrate. The lenses may be coupled to light pipes. The lenses may concentrate light through the light pipes to multi-junction cells. Diffuse light may be transferred through the array substrate to a silicon cell. The lenses and light pipes may be manufactured using a molding and drawing process.

Micro-scale concentrated photovoltaic module

Different configurations of multi-faceted optical elements and associated methods are described that split an input optical beam into multiple output beams, and in a reverse configuration, combine a set of input beams into an output beam. One example multi-faceted optical element includes K optical facets, where K is greater than or equal to six, and K-2 internal surfaces. Each internal surface reflects at least a portion of the incident light and includes a coating designed to modify one or more of a spectral content, polarization, intensity or phase of the incident beam. The multifaceted optical element is configurable to either split an input light beam into four or more output light beams, or to combine four or more input light beams into a single output light beam. Such a multi-faceted optical element can be implemented as part of, for example, a display system, a multi-spectral camera or a polarization camera.

Polygon x-prism for imaging and display applications

A polarization and color sensitive pixel device and a focal plane array made therefrom. Each incorporates a thick color/polarization filter stack and microlens array for visible (0.4-0.75 micron), near infrared (0.75-3 micron), mid infrared (3-8 micron) and long wave infrared (8-15 micron) imaging. A thick pixel filter has a thickness of between about one to 10&#xd7; the operational wavelength, while a thick focal plane array filter is on the order of or larger than the size or up to 10&#xd7; the pitch of the pixels in the focal plane array. The optical filters can be precisely fabricated on a wafer. A filter array can be mounted directly on top of an image sensor to create a polarization camera. Alternatively, the optical filters can be fabricated directly on the image sensor.

Microbolometer apparatus, methods, and applications

Apparatus and methods are disclosed for measuring polarization properties and phase information, for example as can be used in microscopy applications. According to one example of the disclosed technology, an apparatus includes a light source, an interferometer configured to receive light generated by the light source and split the received light into two split beam outputs. The split beam outputs including combined, interfering light beams. Two light sensors, each including a polarization-sensitive focal plane array receive a respective one of the split beam outputs from the interferometer. Thus, some examples of the disclosed technology allows for simultaneous or concurrent measurement of properties of light including intensity, wavelength, polarization, and phase. The polarization-sensitive focal plane array includes a number of macropixels, each of which includes superpixels having different polarization filtering properties, each of which includes one or more pixels, which comprise filters for different colors.

Polarization and phase microscope

Methods, devices and systems are described that use a combination multiple light sources having different coherence lengths to measure surface characteristics of an object. One example system includes a two laser sources configured to operate at a first and a second center wavelength, a broadband source configured to operate at a range of wavelengths outside of the operating range of the at least two lasers, a phase mask array and a color filter arranged, respectively, to impart different phase delays and provide spectral filtering corresponding to the emitted radiation from the sources. A pixelated sensor device is positioned to simultaneously measure intensity values associated with a plurality of interferograms formed due to interference of light from the light sources after propagation through the phase mask array and the color filter. The measured intensity values enable the determination of surface characteristics of the object.
