Systems and methods are provided that allow client programs using APIs for accessing local DB2 databases to access DB2 systems on remote logical partitions and remote zSeries mainframes rather than from a local DB2 system. For example, a method may include intercepting a DB2 request using a documented API for accessing local DB2 databases from a client program executing on a source mainframe system. The method may also include selecting a destination mainframe system and sending a buffer including information from the request from the source mainframe system to the destination mainframe system and establishing, at the destination mainframe system, a DB2 connection with the DB2 system from the request. The method may further include receiving a response from the DB2 system, sending a buffer having information from the response from the destination mainframe system to the source mainframe system, and providing the information to the client program.

Systems and methods for remote access to DB2 databases

In one aspect, a computer-implemented method provides more efficient outages for databases. The method may include intercepting a database transaction request prior to connection to the database subsystem and determining whether the transaction will finish before an expected drain time for the database object, the transaction being associated with the database object. The method may also include allowing the transaction to proceed when it is determined that the transaction will finish before the expected drain time and suspending the transaction otherwise. The transaction may be associated with the database object in a table so that only transactions associated with the database object are considered for suspension. In another aspect, the method may include determining which transactions running when a drain for the object is initiated and associating the running transactions with the database object in the table.

Systems and methods for efficient DB2 outage operations

A copy utility creates a copy of source database objects that is transactionally consistent to a consistent point-in-time, and a recovery utility applies log records to the consistent copy to make a resulting image that is updated as of an identified point-in-time (i.e., the current time or a point-in-time after the copy was made). To effectively recover and apply the logs so that no previously in-flight transactions are lost, the copy utility registers a starting point indicating a point-in-time for logs to be applied to the copy and also registers a smallest lock size used to block access to target data when the copy was made. The recovery utility bases its recovery operations using the registered starting point and the smallest lock size when applying log records to the copy so as not to lose any previously in-flight transactions.

Database recovery using logs applied to consistent copies

An online index building operation is disclosed for building an index from source data with minimal loss of availability to the source data. The source data can be maintained in a relational database system, such as in a tablespace of a DB2&#xae; environment. The disclosed operation creates a consistent image of the source data as of a point-in-time and creates an index from the consistent image. Then, the disclosed operation repeats the acts of making the image consistent as of a subsequent point-in-time and updating the index to reflect the subsequent consistent image until substantially caught up with the current changes to the source data. If not caught up, the disclosed operation continues unless it is falling behind at which point the operation terminates. If it is caught up, the disclosed operation locks access to the source data, updates the image to reflect any final changes, updates the index, and allows access to the index.

Method and apparatus for building index of source data

Methods and systems for providing access to spaces in a database during a recovery process affecting the database. Spaces in the database that are affected by the recovery process are identified and I/O requests sent to a media manager associated with the database are intercepted. If the I/O request is for a read operation to a space affected by the recovery process and the corresponding page has been recovered, the data in the page may be read. If the page has not been recovered, the read operation may be held in a cache until the recovery utility indicates that the page has been recovered. If the I/O request is for a write operation to a space affected by the recovery process, the data may be written to a cache.

System and method for providing access to a database during a recovery process

Techniques to create physically and transactionally consistent copies of one or more database objects without impacting the availability of the target database objects are described. In one technique, a consistent copy is created as of the time a copy utility is executed. In another technique, a consistent copy is created as of an arbitrary specified time. This approach modifies a prior copy to bring it 'up-to-date.' In yet another technique, a consistent copy is created by starting with a current snapshot of the target database objects and selectively removing updates from it back to a user specified arbitrary point-in-time. Each of the described techniques generate consistent copies of the target database objects without blocking users from accessing the target objects during the copy operation.

Unobtrusive point-in-time consistent copies

Techniques to provide run-time access to a database image through a target database management system (DBMS) are described. An empty database in the target DBMS (the 'target database') is created having substantially the same schema as the database image. At run-time, queries directed to the target database are intercepted and redirected to the database image. Information returned in response to the redirected query is modified so that internal database identifiers retrieved from the database image are replaced with like database identifiers associated with the target database management system. Thus, run-time access to database image content is provided without the need to load the database image's data content into a target database.
