A system is provided for powering an optical network terminal, including a power adapter connected to the optical network terminal and configured to power the optical network terminal; and a battery tray, connected to the power adapter, configured to supply auxiliary power to the optical network terminal through the power adapter from one or more batteries contained within the battery tray, wherein the battery tray is configured to allow removal and replacement, at the customer premise, of the one or more batteries.

Auxiliary power system for optical network terminal

A system and method for permitting a customer of a telecommunication company, for whom fiber to the premises (FTTP) has been installed, to continue to use the telephone during utility company power failure, by powering both the optical network terminal (ONT) and the customer's telephone(s). The battery backup unit (BBU) maintains telephone usage for a predetermined period of time after power failure, e.g., two hours, consistent with duration of most utility company power outages. This permits non-interrupted telephone service for most outages and, after that period of time, if utility company power has not been restored, the BBU provides power in order to provide telephone service only on demand by the customer, for up to approximately two more cumulative hours of usage. At the end of each usage on demand, the BBU powers the telephone for approximately five more minutes to permit return phone calls, if any, after which telephone service is shut off until any next usage on demand.

Optical network terminal battery back-up control

An optical network terminal (ONT) is powered via a remote power supply. The remote power supply is connected to a standard customer premises electrical power outlet, providing a power source for power at a first format (e.g., 110 VAC). The remote power supply performs a power transformation to convert the power in the first power format to a second format (e.g., 48 VDC). This allows the powering of the ONT from farther distances, and thus allows for the easier installation of ONTs at customer premises which may not have optimally placed power outlets. A battery backup may also be used (either in parallel or serially), in order to provide availability of communications signals during a public power outage. When the battery backup used serially with the remote power supply, additional distance between the power outlet and the ONT may be accommodated.

Multi-component ONT power supply

Optical network terminal (ONT) power failure management. A system for permitting a customer of a telecommunication company, for whom fiber to the premises (FTTP) has been installed, to control operating features associated with operation of a battery backup unit (BBU) which is used, during power failure, for powering the ONT associated with the FTTP installation and the customer's telephone(s). The controlling of these features includes utilization of signal-controlled switches, which are manually over-rideable by the customer, thereby providing the desired operating feature control.

Optical network terminal power failure management

A battery pack module having a battery and a battery charger suitable for re-charging the battery. The battery pack powers a network terminal such as an optical network terminal (ONT) upon utility-company power failure. Upon return of power from the power utility company the battery charger automatically re-charges the battery. A different battery pack having different battery charger and battery with different battery chemistry can be exchanged for the original battery pack housed within the ONT without requiring any mechanical or electrical modification to the ONT. A battery temperature sensing device in cooperation with a microprocessor, both included with the battery pack, ensures that the recharging of the battery is performed efficiently.
