The invention relates to an improvement in an engine fuel pump having a fill port in a plunger closed and opened during plunger strokes by a face of a relatively stationary barrel surrounding the plunger. A spill port in the plunger is closed and opened during plunger strokes by a relatively stationary collar surrounding the plunger and a linkage structure is operable by a governor or the like for adjusting the collar axially on the plunger to vary the separation of the barrel face from the collar and thereby the volume of fuel delivered per plunger stroke. The improvement of the invention comprises an oblique surface serving as the barrel face along with apparatus for adjustably setting the angular position of the plunger about its axes and thereby adjusting injection timing.

Injection nozzle assembly

A fuel injection nozzle assembly includes a retraction valve disposed and encapsulated within the same housing as the injector valve for thereby reducing the amount of fuel trapped between these valves so that the retraction valve can retract a calculated volume of the trapped fuel abruptly and obtain a sharp ending of the injection cycle.

An accumulator type injection valve of simple construction and relatively large accumulator capacity has opposed inlet and outlet valves for alternately and intermittently communicating a single chamber with an inlet passage for receiving fuel from a pump and an outlet passage in further communication with an injection nozzle, the outlet valve being an inwardly opening needle valve responsive to fluid pressure within the chamber. In order to even further improve operating response of the injection valve, a dump valve relieves fluid pressure from the chamber below a preselected pressure.

There is disclosed a fuel injector assembly having a disc type delivery valve and a reverse check combined with the delivery valve to control secondary pressure to reduce fuel line erosion due to cavitation. The arrangement provides an unobstructed passageway for fuel delivery upon opening of the valve.
