A method for producing a brake assembly () including friction material () molded to a backplate () using an improved receptacle plate () is provided. The backplate () includes openings () each having an opening diameter (D). The receptacle plate () includes pins () extending transversely from a receiving surface (). The method includes aligning the openings () of the backplate () with the pins () of the receptacle plate (). Each pin () has a pin diameter (D) less than the opening diameter (D) of the aligned opening (). The friction material () is molded to the backplate () by heating the friction material () and the receptacle plate (), and forcing the friction material () through the openings () of the backplate (). The pins () extend into a center portion () of the friction material () and improve the degree of curing of the friction material ().

Friction material tooling

A brake pad assembly () comprising a molded material () affixed to a backing plate () having opposed faces (), one or more non-circular extrusion openings () through its thickness, and tab-like extensions () or other integral attachment for incorporating the assembly () by location and support into a vehicle brake system. The molded material () extends over both opposed faces () of the backing plate () by being extruded through the extrusion openings () to provide a unitary structure wherein molded material () at one side of the backing plate () functions as a friction-generating pad material () and the portion of the molded material () at the opposite side of the backing plate () functions as the assembly shim-like noise attenuating element () due to vibration damping properties. The number, configuration, and placement of the extrusion openings () through the thickness of the backing plate () is varied to alter the noise attenuating properties of the assembly (), further reducing the tendency for modal locking of brake components.

Noise attenuating friction assembly

A vehicle brake shoe assembly () having a rigid backing plate () incorporating a plurality of extensions () which project through the brake friction material matrix () to the outer friction surface () of the brake shoe assembly (). Each extension () is configured to cooperate with the brake friction material matrix () to engage a surface of an opposing friction element () simultaneously with the friction material (), increasing the static and dynamic friction performance of the assembly () during initial use beyond that achieved from the application of either the brake friction material () or the projections () alone.

High friction brake shoe assembly

A vehicle brake shoe assembly having a brake shoe platform incorporating a plurality of extensions which project through the brake friction material matrix to the outer friction surface of the brake shoe assembly. Each extension is configured to cooperate with the brake friction material matrix to engage a surface of an opposing friction element, increasing the static and dynamic friction performance of the assembly beyond that achieved from the engagement of the brake friction material matrix and the surface of the opposing friction element alone.
