A guide and method for tilting a colonoscope in the rectum during a colonoscopy to attain a favorable direction for advancement of the scope through the colon. The guide comprises an at least partially rigid, elongated body member that, preferably, is attached to a handle at its proximal end. The body member can have a flat or curved cross-section. One or more ring members can be provided along the length of the body member to receive the scope and maintain the guide in close abutting relation therewith. The ring members can be slotted to allow side-loading of the guide onto the scope. Alternatively, a rigid or graduated rigid tubular member can be part of the guide member. An injection port allows injection of a lubricant. By tilting the colonoscope at various difficult stages of a colonoscopy, sigmoid looping is minimized to facilitate advancing the scope through the colon.

Colonoscope guide and method of use for improved colonoscopy

A locking mechanism for an endoscopic overtube comprising a generally tubular member having a slot extending from the distal end to the proximal end of the tubular member for insertion of an endoscope into the lumen configured to slidably receive the endoscope. The overtube has a second, smaller lumen configured to receive an elongated member. The slot has an interdigitating configuration with a plurality of interlocking members that join together to close the overtube. The second lumen connects the interlocking members to receive the elongated member therein to align and securely close the slot around the endoscope in the larger lumen. The elongated member in the second lumen connects the ends of the tubular member to keep the slot closed during an endoscopic procedure. A sleeve can be used at the distal end of the overtube to maintain closure of the slot.

Locking mechanism for an endoscopic overtube

A splint or overtube device for use in keeping the sigmoid colon in a straightened position during endoscopy to facilitate advancement of the colonoscope or other types of medical endoscopes to the cecum. The present device utilizes an elongated member having a tight distal end or seal to close off the annular space between the endoscope and the elongated member at the distal end of the splint to prevent perforation of the colon. A hydrophilic lubricating substance can be utilized to minimize friction between the tight distal end or seal and the splint. An injection port is provided to allow the endoscope operator to inject fluid to lubricate the distal end or seal, to deflect away the colonic wall in advance of the splint and to remotely lubricate the scope distally. A second sealing member can be utilized at the proximal end of the splint to prevent loss of fluids from the splint.

Sigmoid splint device for endoscopy

Disclosed is a splint or overtube device for use in keeping the sigmoid colon in a straightened position during endoscopy to facilitate advancement of the colonoscope or other types of medical endoscopes to the cecum. This device utilizes a distal seal made from a sponge-like material to close off the space between the endoscope and the splint at the distal end of the splint to prevent perforation of the colon. The distal seal can be tapered to further facilitate passage of the splint through the colon and minimize the likelihood of colon perforations. A hydrophilic lubricating substance is utilized to minimize friction between the endoscope and the splint. A second sealing member is utilized at the proximal end of the splint to prevent loss of fluids from the splint and to guide the endoscope through the splint. An injection port is provided to allow the endoscope operator to inject fluid to lubricate the distal seal, to enlarge the colon in advance of the splint and to clear a path through the colon for the splint.

A medical device and method for eye surgery and method for illumination and fluid flow, particularly retinal surgery, combines a flow of infusing fluid and optical fiber illumination. The device uses a single strand of plastic optical fiber which extends through bores in a juncture device tube and needle cannula with sufficient clearance to permit the flow of the infusing fluid. The illuminating tip of the optical fiber is moved, during surgery, by loosening a cap of the junction device to release the optical fiber, moving the optical fiber within the junction device, and then re-tightening the cap to re-secure the optical fiber.

A laser delivery system for ophthalmic surgery and the like includes a handpiece terminating distally in a probe, a laser connector, and an optical fiber for transmitting laser light from a laser source to an eye to be treated. The optical fiber extends substantially through the handpiece probe. The probe also includes a fluid path from the distal end thereof to the interior of the handpiece body. The probe has a soft tip to reduce the possibility of injury to the interior of the eye by contact with the metal portion of the probe.

A medical device for eye surgery, particularly retinal surgery, combines a flow of infusing fluid and optical fiber illumination. The device uses a single strand of plastic optical fiber which extends through bores in a juncture device, tube and needle cannula with sufficient clearance to permit the flow of the infusing fluid.

A laser delivery system for ophthalmic surgery and the like includes a handpiece, a laser connector, and an optical fiber for transmitting laser light from a laser source to an eye to be treated. The optical fiber extends through the handpiece tip. The tip also includes a fluid path from the distal end thereof to the interior of the handpiece body. The handpiece body has a fluid path in fluid communication with the fluid path of the tip, which fluid path extends to the exterior of the handpiece. The probe is inserted into the eye during surgery and may have multiple functions, reducing surgical complications. Fluid in the eye may flow through the tip and the handpiece body while laser light from the laser source is directed by the optical fiber into the eye. Structure is provided for refluxing material in the tip back into the eye as desired by the user. Alternatively, fluid may be delivered through the handpiece and tip to the surgical site if needed. A clamp is included to hold the optical fiber in place in an operating field if desired.
