A color display system includes a cathode-ray tube and yoke. The yoke is a self-converging type that produces an astigmatic magnetic deflection field within the tube. The cathode-ray tube has an electron gun for generating and directing three electron beams along paths toward a screen of the tube. The electron gun includes electrodes that comprise a beam-forming region and electrodes that form a main focusing lens, and features electrodes for forming a multipole lens between the beam-forming region and the main focusing lens in each of the electron beam paths. Each multipole lens is oriented to provide a correction to an associated electron beam to at least partially compensate for the effect of the astigmatic magnetic field on the associated beam. There are two multipole lens electrodes. A first multipole lens electrode is connected to a main focusing lens electrode, and a second multipole lens electrode is located between the first multipole lens electrode and the beam-forming region and facing the first multipole lens electrode.

Color display system

A color display system includes a cathode-ray tube and yoke. The yoke is a non-converging type. The cathode-ray tube has an electron gun for generating and directing three electron beams, a center beam and two outer beams, along paths toward a screen of the tube. The electron gun includes electrodes that comprise a beam-forming region and electrodes that form a main focusing lens. The main focusing lens is formed by at least two focusing electrodes. The focusing electrode closest to the beam-forming region includes at least two spaced parts. Each spaced part forms a portion of a dipole lens structure in the path of an outer electron beam. Means are provided for applying to at least one of the spaced parts a dynamic signal which is related to the deflection of the electron beams.

A color display system includes a cathode-ray tube and self-converging yoke that produces an astigmatic magnetic deflection field within the tube. The tube has an electron gun for generating and directing three electron beams along paths toward a screen. The gun includes beam-forming region electrodes, main focusing lens electrodes, and two electrodes for forming a multipole lens between the beam-forming region and the main focusing lens in each of the electron beam paths. Each multipole lens is oriented to provide a correction to an associated electron beam to at least partially compensate for the effect of the astigmatic magnetic deflection field on that beam. A first multipole lens electrode is located between the beam-forming region electrodes and the main focusing lens electrodes. A second multipole electrode is connected to a main focusing lens electrode and located between the first multipole lens electrode and the main focusing lens, adjacent to the first multipole lens electrode. Means are included for applying a fixed focus voltage to the second multipole lens electrode and a dynamic voltage signal, related to the deflection of the electron beams to the first multipole lens electrode. Each multipole lens is located sufficiently close to the main focusing lens to cause the strength of the main focusing lens to vary as a function of voltage variation of the dynamic voltage signal.

A color display system includes a cathode-ray tube and yoke. The yoke is a non-converging type. The cathode-ray tube has en electron gun assembly for generating and directing three electron beams, located at the corners of an equilateral triangle, along paths toward a screen of the tube. The electron gun assembly comprises three electron guns each including electrodes that comprise a beam-forming region and electrodes that form a main focusing lens in the path of each electron beam. The main focusing lens is formed by at least two focusing electrodes. The focusing electrode closest to the beam-forming region includes a separated part adjacent to the paths of each of the electron beams. Each separated part forms a portion of the dipole lens structure in the path of an electron beam. Means are provided for applying dynamic signals to the separated parts which are related to the deflection of the electron beams. The dipole lens structures establish electrostatic dipole fields in the path of the three electron beams that cause the beams to converge at the screen for all angles of deflection.

The novel CRT includes a color-selection structure which comprises a first electrode having a plurality of column and row elements forming a plurality of apertures, and a second electrode including an array of conductors electrically insulated from the first electrode. The plurality of apertures in the first electrode comprise alternate columns of first and second apertures. The first apertures have a width less than the width of the second apertures which are intersected by the conductors of the second electrodes to form first and second windows. The CRT also includes a viewing screen comprising an array of substantially parallel phosphor stripes of three different emission colors arranged in cyclic order in adjacent triads. Each of the triads of phosphor stripes is associated with a column of first and second windows and a column of first apertures. The column of first apertures is aligned with one of the phosphor stripes of the triad and is flanked on one side by a column of first windows and on the other side by a column of second windows. A method of producing an image screen using the novel color-selection structure is also disclosed. The method comprises the steps of: (a) providing the conductors of the second electrode of the color-selection structure with an opaque light blocking structure to temporarily close the first and second windows, (b) projecting light through the first apertures of the first electrode whereby to photodeposit the screen, and (c) then removing the opaque light blocking structure from the conductors of the second electrode to open the first and second windows.

A cathode-ray tube includes a display screen having an array of phosphor stripes of three different emission colors arranged in cyclic order in adjacent triads. The tube further includes an electron gun for producing three convergent inline electron beams directed toward the display screen. A color selection structure is positioned between the display screen and the electron gun. The color selection structure includes a metal masking plate having therein an array of apertures arranged in columns that are substantially parallel to the phosphor stripes. The color selection structure further includes beam-influencing strips of insulation disposed on the masking plate which, in combination with the masking plate, define an array of windows for transmitting therethrough portions of the electron beams. A high voltage contact is provided for applying a potential to the metal masking plate and to the display screen. The strips of insulation are parallel to the phosphor stripes of the display screen. The strips of insulation are charged to a focusing potential by secondary electrons incident thereon and emanating from the display screen as a result of impingement thereon of the electron beams from the electron gun.

The novel CRT is similar in structure to prior art CRT's except for the color-selection structure, which, as in the prior CRT's is for producing a plurality of lenses for passing and focusing portions of electron beams to associated color groups of the target. In the novel CRT, the color-selection structure comprises at least one lenticular member having therein an array of windows associated with only one color group, each window having a half-width, r, and a conductive mesh having interstitial dimensions small compared to the phosphor elements in the color groups. The lenticular member is longitudinally spaced a distance, s, from the conductive mesh so that the ratio of the longitudinal spacing, s, to the half-width, r, of the window is much less than unity (s/r&lt;&lt;1), so that the lenticular member and the conductive mesh provide a strong lens action.

The novel method of fabricating a color-selection electrode for a cathode-ray tube comprises a combination of step including providing substantially orthogonal sets of support members which cross at a multiplicity of locations to form an apertured array. At least one of the sets of support members are insulators. The method includes coating the array with a continuously conductive metal film except at the multiplicity of crossings and providing electrical terminals for each of the sets of coated members. A structure utilizing the novel method is also described.

CRT employs a quadrupolar-focusing color-selection structure comprising two or more apertured masking plates. Each plate has therein an array of substantially rectangular apertures which are positioned relative to one another to produce electrostatic quadrupolar-focusing lenses when operating voltages are applied thereto. The color-selection structure may, by its geometry, provide at the same time electrostatic dipolar deflecting fields when operating voltages are applied.

CRT comprises a color-selection structure for producing a plurality of quadrupolar lenses, each lens defining a window for passing and focusing portions of electron beams to an associated color group of a target. The color-selection structure comprises (i) a metal masking plate having therein an array of substantially rectangular windows, each window having associated therewith (ii) a pair of first conductors insulatingly spaced from one major surface of the plate and located adjacent opposite sides of the aperture and (iii) a pair of second conductors insulatingly spaced from the other major surface of the plate and located adjacent opposte sides of the window. The CRT includes means for applying a voltage to said plate, means for applying a voltage to said pairs of first conductors and means for applying a voltage to said pairs of second conductors.

A CRT comprises a deflection-and-focus color-selection masking structure, a screen of parallel phosphor stripes, and means for producing three convergent in-line electron beams directed towards the target. The masking structure comprises a metal masking plate having two major surfaces and having therein an array of apertures arranged in columns that are substantially parallel to the phosphor stripes. Arrays of narrow conductors are insulatingly supported in opposed positions on each major surface of said plate. The conductors extend substantially parallel to the stripes and are located in every other space between the columns.

An evacuated envelope has a rectangular display section and a gun section at one edge of the display section. The display section includes front and back walls which are generally rectangular, in closely spaced, parallel relation, and a plurality of spaced, parallel support walls between the front and back walls forming a plurality of parallel channels. The gun section extends across one end of the channels and includes therein gun structure which will direct electrons into the channels. In each of the channels is a beam guide which confines the electrons in a beam and guides the beam along the length of the channel. The beam guide also includes means for selectively deflecting the electron beam out of the guide at selective points along the guide so that beam will impinge upon a phosphor screen along the inner surface of the front wall. In each of the channels is a scanning deflector which deflects the path of the beam as it passes from the guide to the phosphor screen so that each of the beams will scan a portion of the phosphor screen.

The pad comprises a sheet of flexible insulating material carrying an array of conductive sensor strips on one surface. On the opposite surface of the insulating sheet are provided four conductive pickup strips, two at each end. One pickup strip at each end is connected through the sheet by metallic staples to the odd-numbered sensor strips, and the other two pickup strips are connected by staples to the even-numbered sensor strips. Thus, two sets of sensor strips are provided, and two connections are made to each strip in each set, and these connections are used to couple the pad into an alarm circuit. In a second arrangement, conductive tapes are used to connect together sensor strips and pickup strips. In use, the moisture being sensed makes an electrical connection between the two sets of sensing strips, thus activating the alarm circuit.
