An air bag assembly (20) comprising a reaction housing assembly (30) comprising a first member (34) defining top (50), bottom (52) and rear wall (54), and a plurality of end plates (40a,b) adapted to mate with open ends (56a,b) of the first member (34), the first member (34) and end plates (40a,b) defining an open mouth (44). A first one (40a) of the end plates (40a,b) includes a clearance hole (70) and a second end plate (40b) includes an outwardly extending recessed boss (72). A pillow assembly (90) is received into and recessed rearward of the open mouth (44), including a pillow retainer (92) secured to the reaction housing assembly and an inflatable pillow (100) or air bag attached to the pillow retainer (82); the pillow is stored in a compact, predeployment condition prior to inflation.

Air bag retainer assembly

An air bag (50) comprising: a piece of material (52) suitable for use as an air bag or cushion defining a main panel; the main panel formed with opposing triangular portions (70,72) and a plurality of transition edges (100), wherein adjacent edges of the various triangular portions are sewn together and certain ones of the transition edges are sewn together to yield the assembled air bag.

Air bag and method of fabricating same

A device (20) comprising a planar metal sheet (21;21') having formed thereon at least a first set of opposing shaped slots (60a,b) such that upon forming the planar sheet as an open ended (122) generally cylindrical member or cylinder (28) first portions of the sheet, defined by the slots, extend away from the surface of the formed cylindrical member and form in conjunction with other surfaces of the sheet a plurality of first apertures (62a,b), and the extending first portions serving to define a heat sheet for shielding a portion of an air bag (100), adapted to be secured thereabout, from hot gas generated by a gas generator (50), the device including securement means, interacting with a rearward portion of the cylinderical member and adapted for urging a gas generator (50) into forward facing portions of the cylindrical member, for securing same in place.
