Disclosed are cyclic urea-containing compounds that are useful as antiarrhythmic and/or antifibrillatory agents. These compounds have the following structure: ##STR1## where X and Y are each independently selected from various cyclic moieties; R.sub.5 is a substituted or unsubstituted C.sub.2 alkyl (thus providing a 6-membered cyclic urea); and R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, L, and A are as defined in the specification. Also disclosed are compositions containing the compounds and methods of treating humans or other mammals afflicted with cardiac arrhythmias and/or cardiac fibrillation by administration of the compounds/compositions.

Cyclic ureas useful as antiarrhythmic and antifibrillatory agents

The novel cyclic urethanes, and their pharmaceutically-acceptable salts and esters, described herein which are useful as antiarrhythmic and antifibrillatory agents and have the following general structure: ##STR1## wherein (a) X is a saturated or unsaturated, 5-, 6-, or 7-membered heterocycle or carbocycle;

The 4-oxocyclic ureas and the pharmaceutically acceptable salts and esters thereof, of the present invention are useful as antiarrhythmic and antifibrillatory agents and have the following general structure: ##STR1## wherein X, Y, A, L, R, R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 are defined as in the specification.

A method of preventing epileptic seizures in a human or lower animal subject susceptible to said seizures, comprising systemically administering to said subject a safe and effective amount of a compound of the formula: ##STR1## wherein (a) X is halo or nil, and Y is a substituent selected from the group consisting of unsubstituted or halogen-substituted methyl, halo, nitro, amino, and methoxy; and

5-(3-Trifluoromethylphenyl)-2-furancarboxylic acid 2-(1-methylethylidene)hydrazide is an effective skeletal muscle relaxant.

3-[[5-(4-Chlorophenyl)furfurylidene]amino]-5-(substituted)-2-oxazolidinones are useful as antiinflammatory agents.

Certain 5-phenyl-2-furancarboximidamides of the formula: ##STR1## wherein X represents 2-nitro, 2-amino or 4-amino; R.sub.1 represents hydrogen or butyl; R.sub.2 represents butyl, hexyl or 3,4-dichlorobenzyl are effective antibacterial agents.

N,N-Dimethyl-5-phenyl-2-furamides are useful as anti-inflammatory agents.
