An ECG monitoring system for ambulatory patients includes a small multi-electrode patch that adhesively attaches to the chest of a patient. A reusable battery-powered ECG monitor clips onto the patch and receives patient electrical signals from the electrodes of the patch. A processor continuously processes received ECG signals and stores the signals in memory in the monitor. The processor also analyzes the received ECG signals for predefined arrhythmia. If an arrhythmia is detected, a wireless transceiver in the ECG monitor transmits the event information and an ECG strip to a cellphone handset. The cellphone handset automatically relays the event information and ECG strip to a monitoring center for further diagnosis and necessary intervention.

A defibrillator (AED) using an ECG analysis model or algorithm which can function in two different modes. The ECG analysis model is particularly suited for analysis during periods of CPR. Both modes of operation reach a shock decision in essentially the same way, where one or more ECG data segments indicate a shockable cardiac condition. In one mode of operation, the shock decision is irreversible once made. In another mode of operation, the shock decision is reversible if one or more subsequent ECG data segments indicate a no-shock decision. Improved specificity of the model is obtained without undue degradation of sensitivity to shockable ECG.

An automated external defibrillator (AED) is described which includes two electrocardiogram (ECG) analyzers. One of the ECG analyzers is suitable for use only for ECG which is signal-noise-free, and thus may be used during 'hands-off' analysis periods in which no cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) compressions can be provided. The length of the 'hands-off' analysis period can be shortened by use of the second ECG analyzer in concert with the first ECG analyzer. A defibrillator (AED) and method for using a defibrillator incorporates a user activated button truncates an ongoing ECG analysis to immediately perform a different defibrillator-related function. The AED may use two different ECG analysis algorithms having different sensitivities to a shockable cardiac rhythm, and a press of the button may automatically shift from a first algorithm to a second algorithm with the higher sensitivity. The button may also allow truncation of ongoing analysis and CPR for immediate preparation for electrotherapy.

The patch includes a conductive shield and a contact portion formed on an upper surface thereof. The contact portion extends through the film layer and contacts an electrode formed of a material suitable for conducting electrical signals from a patient. Conductive traces formed on the lower surface of the tab extend to contact pads. A nonconductive layer is printed over the traces and can have a shield formed thereon.
