Surface-binding peptides have the capability of binding to surfaces of biocompatible materials and can thereby be used to immobilize various heterologous molecules of interest onto the surface. This means that surfaces of, for instance, implants and implantable medical devices can be tailored to present various characteristics by immobilizing selected heterologous molecules of interest on the surfaces of the implants and implantable medical devices. The surface-binding peptides consist of 5-17 consecutive amino acids of an extended beta-hairpin motif EIIATMKKKGEKRCLNP (SEQ ID NO: 57) in Interferon gamma-induced protein 10 (IP-10).

Surface-binding peptide

A body fluid purifying arrangement comprises a purifying chamber having a fluid input and a fluid output, a first filter arranged in connection the fluid input, and a second filter arranged in connection with the fluid output. In another embodiment, a body fluid purifying arrangement in the form of a syringe comprises a purifying chamber having a common fluid input and fluid output, and a filter arranged in connection with the common fluid input and output. Granules or particles made of a metal or an oxide of a metal are retained within the purifying chamber by the respective filter(s) to purify a body fluid passing through the purifying chamber from 10 kDa interferon-&#x3b3; inducible protein, IP-10, wherein said metal is a metal of group 4 or 5 of the periodic table of the elements and selected from the group consisting of titanium, zirconium, hafnium, niobium and tantalum.

Selective chemokine modulation

A method of treating or preventing a disease characterized by adverse expression and/or release of 10 kDa interferon-&#x3b3; inducible protein, IP-10, comprises administering granules or particles made of a metal or an oxide of a metal to a subject suffering from the disease. A method of reducing IP-10 in a subject suffering from a disease characterized by adverse expression and/or release of IP-10 comprises administering granules or particles made of a metal or an oxide of a metal to the subject. The metal is a metal of group 4 or 5 of the periodic table of the elements and selected from the group consisting of titanium, zirconium, hafnium, niobium and tantalum.

Disclosed are medical prosthetic device or medical implants which exhibit improved biocompatibility. The devices or implants include a metal material, e.g., titanium, in which the metal surfaces are coated with a corresponding hydride material that contains one or more biomolecule substance. The biomolecule substance may contain one or more biologically active molecules, e.g., bio-adhesives, biopolymers, blood proteins, enzymes, extracellular matrix proteins, extracellular matrix biomolecules, growth factors and hormones, peptide hormones, deoxyribonucleic acids, ribonucleic acids, receptors, inhibitors, drugs, biologically active anions and cations; vitamins; adenosine monophosphate (AMP), adenosine diphosphate (ADP) or adenosine triphosphate (ATP), marker biomolecules, amino acids, fatty acids, nucleotides (RNA and DNA bases), or sugars.

Medical prosthetic devices and implants having improved biocompatibility

The present invention teaches the use of a metal or an oxide of a metal having a capability of reducing the amount of the chemokine IP-IO in a sample and/or reducing the production of IP-IO in cells. The metal is a metal of group 4 or 5 in the periodic table of the elements and preferably titanium. These metals and metal oxides can selectively bind IP-IO to its surface to thereby scavenge IP-IO from the surrounding medium. In addition, a metal-cell contact induces a reduction in the production of IP-IO from IP-IO producing cells. The metals and metal oxides of the present invention can therefore be used for treating and/or preventing medical conditions characterized by adverse IP-IO expression, such as inflammatory reactions.

The invention relates to a medical prosthetic device having a metal material, such as titanium or an alloy thereof, where the surface parts of the metal material are coated with a layer of a corresponding hydroxide material, such as titanium hydroxide. Preferably, the hydroxide layer includes one or more biomolecule substances associated therewith. The invention also relates to an electrolytic process for the preparation of a medical prosthetic device.

Medical prosthetic devices having improved biocompatibility

Disclosed are medical prosthetic devices or medical implants which exhibit improved biocompatitibly. The devices or implants include a metal material, e.g. titanium, in which the metal surface parts are coated with a corresponding hydride material that contains one or more biomolecule substance. This biomolecule substance may contain one or more biologically active molecules, e.g. bio-adhesives, biopolymers, blood proteins, enzymes, extra cellular matrix proteins, extra cellular matrix biomolecules, growth factors and hormones, peptide hormones, deoxyribonucleic acids, ribonucleic acids, receptors, enzyme inhibitors, drugs, biologically active anions and cations, vitamins, adenosine monophosphate (AMP), adenosine diphosphate (ADP), adenosine triphosphate (ATP), marker biomuolecules, amino acids, fatty acids, nucleotides (RNA and DNA bases), or sugars.
