Upon receiving a query at a local database server from a client directed to a LOB stored at a remote database server, a remote LOB locator is created comprising a local LOB locator indicating the LOB's location and a database link associated with the remote database server. The remote LOB locator is communicated to the client, which submits a request to the local database server to perform an operation directed to the LOB. The request is forwarded to the remote database server using the remote LOB locator, where the operation is performed. This mechanism is extended to work with sharded databases. Character set conversions are minimized when returning data to the client from the remote database server. Remote LOB locators may serve as bind variables for DML statements directed to local or remote tables. Local LOB locators may serve as bind variables for DML statements directed to remote tables.

Method and system for implementing distributed lobs

Techniques are described herein for leveraging and extending relational data sharding infrastructure to provide comprehensive support for sharding semi-structured and unstructured data, in addition to the relational data, in a single sharded database system. Specifically, techniques are described in which a catalog server pre-gathers all data it needs to answer fetches from a dynamically created temporary lob. In addition, techniques are provided in which a catalog server encodes shard identifiers in lob locators sent to the client. Techniques are provided for pushing down various operators to shard servers.

Handling semi-structured and unstructured data in a sharded database environment

One embodiment of the present invention provides a system that facilitates managing security policies for databases in a distributed system. During operation, the system creates multiple label security policies. The system stores these security policies in a directory and automatically propagates them from the directory to each database within the distributed system. In doing so, the system allows for applying policies to individual tables and schema in any database in the distributed system. The system facilitates centralized administration of security policies and removes the need for replicating policies, since the policy information is available in the directory.
