A composition for binding metal oxides, a metal oxide pellet produced with the binder and metal oxide, and methods for producing the metal oxide pellets. The binder composition includes a pelletizing agent comprising at least one of a cement, a bitumen, and a polymer and a sinter enhancer comprising at least one of a metal sulfide, a metal chloride, and a metal nitrate.

Chemical looping carrier compositions, binders, and related methods

A method in which a parent hydrocarbon-rich material is processed so as to produce both a carbon-rich solid material that has a higher carbon to hydrogen ratio than that of the parent material and a carbon-deficient combustible gas that has a lower carbon to hydrogen ratio than the parent material. In the process, the material is activated by exposing it to a hot gas stream having elevated levels of one or both of carbon dioxide and water vapor. The combustible gas is combusted to produce heat. At least about 80% of the heat is used in one ore more endothermic steps that include drying coal or biomass.

Method of manufacturing carbon-rich product and co-products

A composition, process and system for capturing carbon dioxide from a combustion gas stream. The composition has a particulate porous support medium that has a high volume of pores, an alkaline component distributed within the pores and on the surface of the support medium, and water adsorbed on the alkaline component, wherein the proportion of water in the composition is between about 5% and about 35% by weight of the composition. The process and system contemplates contacting the sorbent and the flowing gas stream together at a temperature and for a time such that some water remains adsorbed in the alkaline component when the contact of the sorbent with the flowing gas ceases.

Capture of carbon dioxide by hybrid sorption

The present invention relates to use of carbon-based sorbents such as activated carbon for controlling vapor phase mercury emissions in coal-fired power plant flue gases or waste incineration flue gases. The invention features new methods that improve the performance of carbonaceous sorbents for mercury control compared to the previous methods. One method consists of injecting the sorbent (consisting of at least some carbonaceous material) into the flue gas where the flue gas temperature is at a value above about 1100&#xb0; F. and below about 2000&#xb0; F. The invention also consists of injecting the sorbent within or upstream of an economizer section in a coal-fired power boiler. Injecting the sorbent at the locations indicated above, rather than further downstream, provides increased residence time for contact between the flue gas and the sorbent resulting in increased mercury capture, improved sorbent utilization, and improved fly ash properties.

Method for capturing mercury from flue gas

An adsorbent composition for removing mercury from a flue gas stream, and a method of its use. The composition is a powdered activated carbon having at least one of a halogen-containing component and an alkaline component dispersed thereon. A flow agent can be composited with the material to maintain flowability in situ.

Flue gas mercury control

A systemfor removing elemental mercury or mercury compounds handles carbonaceous sorbentof a starter batch stored in a siloin an agglomerated state. The sorbentis fed by a feederto a separation device, which comminutes (if necessary) and de-agglomerates the sorbent particlesto their primary size distribution. This devicemay be a particle-particle separator or a jet mill, where compressed air or high-pressure steam is the energy source. The de-agglomerated sorbentof a contact batch created from the starter batch is conveyed by an airsteam for injection at a contact locationin a flue gas duct whereat carbonaceous sorbent of the contact batch adsorbs mercury from the flue gas.

Control of mercury emissions from solid fuel combustion

A system and method for producing activated carbon comprising carbonizing a solid carbonaceous material in a carbonization zone of an activated carbon production apparatus (ACPA) to yield a carbonized product and carbonization product gases, the carbonization zone comprising carbonaceous material inlet, char outlet and carbonization gas outlet; activating the carbonized product via activation with steam in an activation zone of the ACPA to yield activated carbon and activation product gases, the activation zone comprising activated carbon outlet, activation gas outlet, and activation steam inlet; and utilizing process gas comprising at least a portion of the carbonization product gases or a combustion product thereof; at least a portion of the activation product gases or a combustion product thereof; or a combination thereof in a solid fuel boiler system that burns a solid fuel boiler feed with air to produce boiler-produced steam and flue gas, the boiler upstream of an air heater within a steam/electricity generation plant, said boiler comprising a combustion zone, a boiler-produced steam outlet and at least one flue gas outlet.

System and method for coproduction of activated carbon and steam/electricity

A method for removing mercury from flue gases generated by the combustion of coal comprises: storing a starter batch of activated carbon in an agglomerated state; de-agglomerating the starter batch in a separation device to create a contact batch of activated carbon; transporting the contact batch to a contact location; injecting the contact batch into contact with the flue gas at a contact location having a temperature between 400&#xb0; F. and 1100&#xb0; F., whereupon the activated carbon of the contact batch adsorbs mercury from the flue gas; and removing the activated carbon having mercury adsorbed thereon from the flue gas. The transporting step is conducted with substantially no intermediate storage of the contact batch following the de-agglomeration of the starter batch to prevent re-agglomeration of the activated carbon prior to injection.

A process, system and sorbent for removal of mercury from a combustion exhaust gas stream in a combustion exhaust gas purification scheme that includes a combustion exhaust scrubber system that uses an aqueous liquid to remove acid gases from the combustion exhaust gas. A powdered mercury sorbent is used. The sorbent is introduced into the aqueous scrubber liquid in the scrubber system. After introduction of the mercury sorbent into the scrubber liquid, at least some of the mercury sorbent is separated from the scrubber liquid.

System and method for sequestration and separation of mercury in combustion exhaust gas aqueous scrubber systems

In a method of producing cement clinker and electricity, cement raw mix and hydrocarbon are fed in a circulating fluidized bed boiler ( ). Therein cement raw mix is calcined and steam is produced. Gas and solids out of the fluidized bed enter a cyclone ( ), the solids being separated therein and returned to the bed. Part of those solids are first cooled down in a solids heat exchanger ( ) producing steam. Fly ash consisting predominantly of lime and gas escaping the cyclone are passed through a heat exchanger ( ) and a filter ( ). Method of producing cement clinker and electricity

A method of producing a calcined raw meal and of producing additional steam in an existing steam generator comprises the following steps: pulverized raw meal, hydrocarbon, primary air and secondary air are fed to a calciner system ( ), wherein the raw meal is calcined in a temperature range between 850&deg; C. and 950&deg; C., the calcined raw meal is separated from the calciner flue gases at the exit of the calciner system, the calcined raw meal is directed through a cooler ( ), in which it exchanges its heat with the secondary air, the calciner exhaust gases are directed in the gas path of the backpass of the steam generator ( ) at an appropriate temperature window and are used for steam production. The raw meal consists mainly of limestone (CaCO ) and the calcined material is mainly lime (CaO). The fuel feed ( ) to the steam generator ( ) is reduced during introduction of the exhaust gases into its backpass.
