Various aspects of the present disclosure generally relate to wireless communication. In some aspects, a user equipment (UE) may receive a grant indicating a modulation and coding scheme (MCS) that indicates that the grant is for a retransmission of an initial communication. The UE may decode, based at least in part on the grant indicating the MCS that indicates that the grant is for the retransmission and using a transport block size (TBS) of a prior communication, a communication scheduled by the grant, wherein the prior communication is prior to the initial communication.
