A broadband service is provided by allocating air interface resources in a wireless network that conforms to the 1xEV-DO standard. The air interface resources are characterized by various quality of service (QoS) parameters, such as bandwidth, packet priority and error rate. Packetized information is transmitted in data flows between a base station and cell phones. A particular QoS level is reserved for each of the data flows that support the broadband service. An operating system on a cell phone monitors one data flow as well as another data flow in the opposite direction. When the base station runs out of an air interface resource, the base station suspends the QoS reservation of a data flow. The operating system determines that the QoS reservation in one direction has been suspended and sends an unsolicited message to the base station releasing the QoS reservation in the opposite direction, thereby conserving network resources.

Conserving network capacity by releasing QoS resources

An apparatus and method for facilitating inter-technology handoff from a home wireless network comprising comparing a parameter of a home signal to a threshold, wherein the home signal is from the home wireless network where the data session of a persistent always ON application is established; throttling the persistent always ON application; and attempting to acquire a first alternative signal acceptable to the persistent always ON application from a first alternative wireless network using a single RF chain.

Method and apparatus for throttling persistent always on applications

A wireless device receives a request to originate a data call, e.g., from the user or a higher layer application. If origination control is not to be applied, then the wireless device originates the data call immediately. Otherwise, the origination of the data call is controlled based on prior data call origination attempts that are applicable to the data call. For example, the wireless device may originate the data call immediately if (1) the most recent origination attempt was successful or (2) the most recent origination attempt was unsuccessful but a predetermined time period has elapsed since this unsuccessful origination attempt. If the most recent origination attempt was unsuccessful and the predetermined time period has not elapsed, then the wireless device may (1) wait until this predetermined time period elapses and then originate the data call or (2) reject the data call.

Control of data call origination based on prior origination attempts

This disclosure is directed to packet scheduling techniques for prioritizing packets in the first generation (1X) evolution data optimized (EV-DO) network or similar networks that do not provide quality of service (QoS) support at the media access control (MAC) level. The techniques make use of a plurality of prioritized queues that are organized into packet flows. The different packet flows associate packets having similar or identical radio link protocols (RLPs) in order to achieve the necessary error detection for such related packets. The different queues define packet priorities base on packet type, in order to give transmission priority to certain types of packets over other types of packets. By separating the packets into different prioritized queues and associating several queues into common packet flows, prioritization can be achieved along with an efficient implementation of different error detection schemes.

Prioritization techniques for quality of service packet transmission over a network lacking quality of service support at the media access control layer

Multiple applications sharing common resources are arbitrated such that failures resulting from unavailable resources can be avoided. Whenever an application (e.g., a data application) desires to perform an operation (e.g., PPP resynchronization) that requires the use of a shared resource (e.g., an RF receiver), a determination is made as to whether that resource is available. The operation may be delayed while the resource is unavailable. The application may be assigned the resource if it is available or becomes available and may then start the operation. The resource is locked while the operation is pending to avoid assignment to another application. The resource arbitration allows applications to complete their operations without encountering failures due to other applications taking over the resources.

Arbitration of resources at a wireless device among contending applications

A method and/or apparatus for intelligent domain name server selection are provided. A mobile device may wirelessly receive one or more domain name server Internet Protocol (IP) addresses from a network serving agent during a call setup or a network registration. The mobile device then determines whether one or more of the received domain name server IP addresses is valid prior to attempting to contact a domain name server associated with one of the received domain name server IP addresses. A fallback sequence of valid domain name server IP addresses may be generated and provided (either individually or as a group) from a link layer to an application layer for domain name resolution. Received domain name server IP addresses that are geographically closer to a current location of the mobile device or its visited network may be given priority.

To initiate dormancy early, a wireless device receives an IP packet from a wireless network and determines whether the received IP packet is an unsolicited IP packet. An unsolicited IP packet may be declared if the received IP packet causes the wireless device to reactivate from dormancy or is not delivered to an application or service running at the wireless device. The wireless device transitions to dormancy early if the received IP packet is deemed to be an unsolicited IP packet and no other events prevent transition to dormancy. The wireless device may use (1) a shortened value for an inactivity timer for a predetermined time duration if an unsolicited IP packet is detected and (2) a nominal value for the inactivity timer thereafter. The wireless device resets the inactivity timer whenever an IP packet is sent or received and transitions to dormancy upon expiration of the inactivity timer.

Method and apparatus for mitigating the impact of receiving unsolicited IP packets at a wireless device

In a method for managing quality of service (QoS) resources during handoff across communication systems having different grades of QoS awareness, an access terminal (AT) determines that handoff has occurred from a QoS unaware system to a QoS aware system. The AT also determines whether there are any allocated, unrequested QoS resources. If one or more allocated, unrequested QoS resources are identified, the AT requests that the QoS aware system release the one or more allocated, unrequested QoS resources. The AT also determines whether there are any requested, unallocated QoS resources. If one or more requested, unallocated QoS resources are identified, the AT requests that the QoS aware system allocate the one or more requested, unallocated QoS resources to the application.

Systems and methods for managing resources during handoff across communication systems having different grades of quality of service awareness

More seamless handoff between access networks is achieved by saving session information for each access network upon being handed off from the access network and invoking the saved session information upon being handed back to the access network. An access terminal establishes a first session with a first access network, which may entail performing QoS negotiation with the first access network and setting up packet filters at a packet data gateway. The access terminal exchanges data with the first access network in accordance with the configuration of the first session. The access terminal saves the first session configuration after being handed off to a second access network, establishes a second session with the second access network, and exchanges data with the second access network in accordance with the configuration of the second session. The access terminal uses the saved first session configuration upon being handed back to the first access network.

A method of signal transmission according to one embodiment includes requesting a packet data serving node to filter a specified traffic flow from among a stream of packets. The method also includes requesting a radio access network to provide an indicated quality-of-service (QoS) treatment for the flow over a wireless air interface. The method further includes rescinding the request to filter or the request to provide a QoS treatment in response to a failure of the other request.

Systems, methods, and apparatus for quality of service processing

A wireless device establishes a data session with a data call, and a data connection is set up for the data session. The wireless device may receive or originate a voice call while the data session is dormant, exchange traffic data for the voice call, and perform handoff between base station controllers (BSCs), if needed, during the voice call. Upon termination of the voice call, the wireless device determines whether it has moved to a new packet zone during the voice call. This may be the case if the wireless device was handed off between BSCs located in different packet zones. If the wireless device has moved to a new packet zone, then the data connection is updated, e.g., by sending to the current serving BSC an origination message indicating no data to send. The network entities perform appropriate actions to update the data connection for the wireless device.
